Question Mufflers - decisions, decisions!

I've got an '01 1500 with currently no muffler whatsoever. I know, I'm a bad girl, it's illegal in good ol' Cali, but I like how it sounds. Sadly, registration is coming up at the end of the month and I need to get big ol' Clifford (yes, I named my truck Clifford) smogged. So I'm looking at Flowmasters, but really have no clue what the difference is in each (the videos give me a bit of difference in the sound, but not whether it's good or even decent for my truck). Is there a specific one that you guys recommend for Dodges? I want to keep that growl that my truck has cause get a big kick out of setting off the car alarms around me when I drive by - plus it just SOUNDS better. Any tips or advice would help!

Couple more questions I wanna know about now that I've read through the forums a bit:
- What are the differences between single, double, and triple chambers? How will that affect performance?
- Flowmaster vs. Magnaflow?
- What is a "glasspack", and what will it do to my truck/performance?

i love glasspacks singe theyre so cheap and LOUD. Im running the 3.9v6 and i can get alarms beeping with single out @ stock diameter pipe

wiki-

"A glasspack is a type of automobile muffler in which the exhaust gas passes straight through the center of the muffler. Packed fibreglass surrounds the exhaust channel and absorbs some of the high-frequency sound.
All mufflers impede the flow of exhaust gas and create back pressure on the engine. Muffler designs involve trade-offs between noise, back pressure, weight and cost. Replacing the factory muffler with one that creates less back pressure is a modification that is often made by hobbyists interested in increasing the engine power of their cars.
Glasspacks are an old, simple, and relatively inexpensive design. They are very effective at reducing back pressure, but not very effective at muffling noise. Thus, they preserve more of the engine's power while sounding louder than conventional mufflers."

If you're wanting to keep that low end torque either get a Super 40 or Super 44 from flowmaster. The Super 40 will be louder, but not as smooth as the Super 44. A glasspack is going to make you lose a lot of back pressure which isn't great for the 5.9. You'll get a little more top end power, but you'll lose low end torque.

If losing that torque isn't a problem, then a glasspack would be what you want. They're the loudest, but honestly I don't think they sound as good as an actual muffler.

I know there are some members on here with magnaflow mufflers on their 5.9's and they sound even better then a flowmaster to me.

If it were me, I'd look at a Super 40 from Flowmaster or a Magnaflow. Glasspacks are just noise.

if you like it straight...just put on glasspacks.it wont cost much and will sound about the same...just a bit quieter.im not sure on the chambers but i believe the more chambers the quieter it is and more backpressure.magnaflow and flowmasters take away the popping sound that your truck has now and it will be more of what i call a muscley tone.

in my opinion...buy glasspacks and clamp them up for inspection....then run them back straight!!!

I've got a glasspack on mine and its alright. The brand name is cherry-bomb. Unfortunately with mine it has already been wore out. It was loud when I first installed it and now its louder and really annoying. Just something to think about because glasspacks do not last as long as other mufflers. Magnaflow has a great sounding performance muffler, definately worth checking out!

Yeah that's what I'm talking about! Subtle, but just growls enough to let everyone know your approaching.

Jcasey10 - that is an awesome sounding muffler right there! I tried watching a few of the Flowmaster videos, and they just didn't seem to have that same growl that the one you posted did!

So, I think I've been swayed towards a MagnaFlow (not just for sound, but also cause they're supported by you guys as well as a few of my favorite car guys ).

Now, any recommendations on WHICH one? Universal? Performance? XL? Does it need to be a specific shape? I'm not familiar with mufflers and such, is there a place I can go to find out my sizes without having a shop charge me an arm and a leg (trying to do my own repairs and mods, when possible)? Are tips necessary?

Not having a muffler already makes this much more frustrating. Sorry for sounding like such a newb.
