I dont think i would call it a safey issue, if you do not know how your truck reacts in snow and ice, stay at a safe speed where your truck would not need to downshift to slow down.

I agree with the "inexperience" angle. We are sooo insulated and "protected" these days that these so called safety devices have lulled everyone into a sense of false security. Driving up to my latest job yesterday I had pulled over on the highway to take a phone call. Noticed it was VERY slippery on this northern road but no big deal. (been doin this for 35 years+). Well, I finished my call, put her in drive and NOTHING. The truck simply would not move!. (2 wheel drive). Really had a laugh watching my poor "safety" devices try to figure out what to do LOL. Full throttle or minimal throttle...... no go . Had to slip into AWD auto to continue. I suppose turning off traction control would have also have worked but being that slippery 4x4 was probably the best option. Just a little "uncommon" sense people!

Its kinda like a trans brake..it appears to lock the diff but its just assisting in slowing down the 5500lb beast.
