it could also be ball joints I had this issues and there was no play in my ball joints but they can dry out and start to may noise. I did lower first it went away and then 2 weeks later came back did upper and that solved it. But sway bar links is also a good start and easy fix.

Would there be any issue with pulling the sway bar end links out of both sides and driving around to see if the noise stops? I figure why buy the end links if thats not really the issue.

Turned out to be struts and mounts, one was so blown you could push it down and it wouldnt come up, the other wouldnt compress.
