Default Think I need a new rear end

98 Ram 1500, 5.2, 4x4 5 speed. Think the carrier bearing is going to call it quits soon. Making some noise. Has 3.55 gear ratio now, just wondering if since I'm going to have to tear it apart anyway, should I change the ratio. Would like a little more pulling power, without losing top end. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Mine has a 4.10 ratio now. Lots of grunt but still ok on the highway for the rare & few times I use the interstate.

3.55 to 3.92 isn't a lot of change. You'll lose maybe 1mpg, but gain the limited slip capability if you put in the limited slip gears.

4.10's will definitely give you more hole-shot but you will sacrifice mpg.

My choice would be 3.92's for a daily driver.

Thanks for the advice. Won't know what I'm doing till I come up with the funds to do it.

If you want more power without losing any top end speed, you need to look at adding HP and torque instead of changing gear ratios.

Would love to add more horsepower, but I'm on a limited budget.
