Default Tire size stock 17" with lift

Hey all,

I'm going to install either a 4" lift and 33's or a 6" lift and 35's (BFG A/T or M/T) on my stock 09 17x8 wheels.

What tire width should I go with and will I need spacers? I don't want to stick out more than 1 to 1.5 inches outside the wheel well but I want the tires to be enough wide so they look good.

Thanks for your advice!

First off I would change the tire heights that you are thinking of going with. You have a 2009 which can take a larger tire then the 3rd gens. If you go with a 4" then 35s would be the way to go and 6" should fit a 37" (but a 35" would still be alright). If you want to keep the stock rims then you wouldn't be able to really go past 305 without rubbing. With that width you will still be alright but you will rub on full lock. You could get by with that width without the spacers, parking lots would just be the enemy haha.

If I may I would say go with the 6" lift instead of the 4". You are going to spend th money on a lift so you may as well go big. The price difference between the two is so small that it just doesnt make sense to go with a 4", unless you have to (for some reason).

In the BFG A/T they have a 315/70/17 which is a 34.5" tall tire and a 37/12.5/17. In the M/T they have a 35 & 37 x12.5x17. So with both tires you may want to go with a 1/2" spacer just to make sure you get no rubbing on the suspension components. You can also install the tires and make a judgment call andthen order spacers if you need them. They might fit, you never know.

The thing about sticking the tires out is it makes the truck look aggressive. I am surprised you do not want to have them sticking out too much. I installed the 305/55/20 tires on my 11 Ram and they stick out MAYBE .5". That is without any spacers or anything. So really even when buying a larger width tires it will stick the tire out. Then adding a spacer will make them stick out more. If you go with any of those tires you are looking at 1.5" of tire out for sure.

Take the width difference between the old and new tires. Then split that number in half, that will be the smount the tires will be sticking out. then you add the spacer width you have your ROUGH total amount that it will be sticking out past the wheel well.

Another thing tat you need to be careful of is the width of the rim in relation to the tire. You have an 8" wide rim so that is pretty thin. Going with a 12.5" wide tire is probably the MAX you should look into going with. The good thing is it will actually narrow the tire so if it was supposed to be 12.5" then your actually looking at less then that.

I just looked at the BFG site and they say the minimum rim width is supposed to be 8.5" on the 12.5" wide tire. You should really look into this and email BFG. If you cannot fit the 12.5" wide then your stuck with the 34.5" A/T tire. The next best thing is going with an aftermarket wheel and going with a negative offset so you dont need the wheel spacers

Thanks for your reply, great info and what I was looking for. I don't mind the tires sticking out a bit I just don't want them too far out.

I know a lot of guys are saying not to go past 35's with the 4.7. I don't really want to get into changing my gears just yet. I also don't want to stuff the wheel well.

So maybe I should look into some aftermarket wheels.

Oh you have the 4.7l I didnt see that. I think the 35" would be the way to go then if you dont want to change the gears. I think adding some performance parts would help out a lot if you go with some bigger tires. You should look into an intake, exhaust and programmer which are the basics of performance upgrades. It will definitely give you more power and it will help you out a lot.

I think the aftermarket wheels is definitely a good idea. They will not just add to the look of the truck they will also make buying tires easier and they will look better. If you do go aftermarket then try to look at something between a 9 and 10" wide rim. You should look at the lift you want to go with since they specify what rim you should use. The backspacing will be important to look at with the lift kit. I know some kits will require an 18" rim, so definitely do some homework with the kit you want to go with

Great info! I appreciate your time! The only mods I have right now are a magnaflow muffler (sounds good for just a muffler install, not too radical but throaty) and superchips programmer installed on the truck (which really woke up that 4.7). I'd love to throw some 35's under it!

Anyone have any pictures of 09 or newer with a 4" lift and 35s?

This is going to make me feel old but my first few 4x4's all ran 15" wheels and most were 15x8 and running a 12.50 inch wide wheel. They were fine. You really had to pay attention to the air pressure though otherwise you would wear out the center of the tire on the pavement.

Maybe because it's a 15" wheel it was ok back then or maybe the info is better now but no one really had any problems back when I was younger. Now though because of the look, styling and backspacing I like the look of wider wheels/tires.

In your case I would go with a different wheel too. Might as well go all out if you're doing it.

Thanks everyone for your input and for the pictures! Very helpful! I agree, if I'm gonna do it I may as well go all out....guess I'm trading in mine for a cummins then going for the lift, wheels and tires!!!

I considering the 6" with 35's now. the 4" looks good but this would give me the option in the future to go bigger. Thanks again guys!

2011 Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 Outdoorsman

So I am installing a new suspension which will give me 3" in the from and 1" in the rear lift. My intention is to use my stock 17" wheels but I am still up in the air. What would be the recommended tire size for this set up? My intentions were to go with 35"s but I hear with a 3.73 rear end that I should go no larger than 33"s. Any input? Any photos out there of similar type set ups with 17" factory rims and larger size tires?
