So 45 minutes later, I get my truck back, and while I've got a LOT of power back in my truck, the damned thing sounds like a freaking kitten now!!! That's not what I wanted at alllllllllllllllll. What do I do? Is there an inexpensive way to get that growl back? Should I take it back and say "wtf you liars?!" Should I suck it up and suffer? I'd prefer not to take it off and lose the power, but I want my big burly growly sound back.

Wait...you'd rather have noise than power?????

Ah...you're only 23, that explains a lot!

Someday, you will learn that quietly powerful is always better than loudly slow!
Or...if you can't outrun the cops with your loud ride, you'd better be able to out fox them with a quiet one.

Haha, I know, I know. I've got mixed emotions. I LOVE that I've got more power, but I miss my sound. I didn't want to LOSE that much sound in getting the power back, though, too.

Ususally with age comes wisdom...and thus the desire to pass by quiet and confident rather than loud and annoying

Enjoy the journey!

If you didn't have a muffler before, it will be a night and day difference with nearly any muffler you put on then. You just got used to running a straight pipe. 2.5 inch sounds too small too, I'd request to get 3". Headers also. You won't be disappointed.

I use this video a lot because it's my truck but also to rep magnaflow. I've got headers as well.

Not sure why you had a muffler put on, it doesn't affect emissions at all.

and as far as 2.5 or 3.0" having little difference... beg to differ. of course it depends on what engine you are running that will have certain things happen to your power curve. classic example... my 69 Roadrunner 383 HP2 335HP had 2.25 or 2.5 when i got it (i know it wasn't factory but not sure since it's been a long dang time), and loved the power, but it was all rusty nasty looking and didn't sound that great. so i went to local muffler shop. after they ripped off the old, they asked what diameter i wanted (since diameter didn't change the price up to 3")... being new to the car world, i just told em,'put on the biggest ya got!". which was 3". got it done. and dannnngggg did it sound good... really deep rumble, but GEEEKERS... was it gutless down low. pulled great once you revved it up. wouldn't lay rubber as easily anymore.

so i would have to equate that to bigger exhaust not providing key characteristics (and a whole lot of other stuff about thermodynamics and flow velocity, blah , blah, blah) at lower RPMS. sure helped it breath higher up. but hey, what do i know. just an average guy that turned wrenches.
You are comparing old worn out exhaust to 3" claiming it made a huge difference. Invalid comparison. If you had compared brand new 2.5" with "X" muffler vs. 3" exhaust with the exact same model of "X" muffler, it would have had minimal difference on sound quality or HP. You need to be making over 500HP at the wheels before you would need 3" duals to avoid a choke point.

Actually, in your case of 3" duals, you lost usable HP and TQ.

Go back to straight pipes, won't affect your smog check. Then you will have the sound you so desire.

Get a cutout or two. Open for your decibel fix and close to hear yourself think.

Good thread, I wouldn't sacrifice hp for noise, but that's just me. I've got a 2.5 with a cherry-bomb glasspack (kind of annoying). Plan to go to magnaflow, should I go 3" or stay 2.5?

3" for sure unless you have true duals...which would mean you had the converters removed and the exhaust shop violated federal law which is unlikely...so 3" for sure.
