Default 4x4 shifter knob

I have a 99 Dodge 1500 4x4. I need to remove the knob so I can take the boot off of the 4x4 shifter. I didn't find any set screw on the knob itself. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the knob off? Seems like the previous owner like to store his have smoked, soggy cigars in the boot. I was wondering where that odor was coming from. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i took mine off a while back. there is a nut underneath the cap. it can be kinda a pita to get off, but a small flathead screwdriver works wonders. you can unscrew the whole knob by itself though. its just a little harder.

Thats the way, be carefull when seperating the shift pattern cap from the knob so you don't tear the rubber lip the pattern cap pops into.

also, the hole the shift pattern cap goes into, with a little finesse, you can put a cap off your favorite beer bottle in there.
