Default Surged & Died

Just after I started my 2004 5.9 today I experienced some surging. (different from the light throttle trans gear hunting issue that has the TSB out on it) Then when I got to the stop sign at the end of the street it died and wouldn't refire. The temp was about 75. The lift pump ran for about 5 seconds each time I cycled the key but no start. I drained the water separator and fuel came out. I had about a third of a tank of fuel per the gauge. I went home and got some more fuel from the tractor and added a gallon. Not because I believed it was empty but because it was easy to rule out that way. After I added fuel, still no start.

Then I held the throttle open about a third while cranking and it started. It idled roughly for a few seconds similar to a flooded gas motor, then settled down and ran fine for the 11 mile trip to the store and back. Now I don't know what to think. Is there any common problem I can look at? Anything I can test to renew my confidence in the truck?

This is my 1st diesel, so I feel a little uncomfortable with unexplained behavior.

Thanks for any input.

regards,
Leon

Leon, my guess is that your lift pump is starting to fail. My truck did the exact same thing before the lift pump died completely. The dealer now has an in tank pump retrofit that they do for our trucks. This is all based on the assumption that you still have the stock engine mounted lift pump... is that correct? If so, my guess is that the LP is going south.

It's gone about 800 miles without a repeat performance. I believe I have the in-tank fuel pump. At least I don't see it on the back of the filter. I haven't let the fuel level get below 1/2 tank though either. In my reading, I found references to a "quarter tank fuel starvation" problem with our trucks. But I could find enough info to understand what exactly it was or where it applied. Anyone have an explanation?

regards,
Leon

Hmm interesting. I haven't heard much about the quarter tank fuel starvation problem.. I have run my truck to below 1/4 tank many times and never had an issue.
