Question are gears needed for a 9" lift???

okay so i have a 2008 ram 1500 ill be getting a 6'' lift+3"body lift and 37r22 tires. Some people have said to use 4.53 or 4.88 gears but then some say i dont need gears yet, see how it drives without them and if needed add them. I need some clarification LOL...Thanks

Not so much the lift than the tire diameter you are going to run under it.
4.56's would prob' be your highest (lowest) option for your 4WD.

Drive it once its on so you can get your own perspective if it needs it or not. Only you can tell

A lot of other factors will play into this. Is your truck a manual or an automatic? Are you planning to offroad your truck, or just do it for the looks? Do you care if your speedometer is off or not?

You can get by with higher gears in my experience, with an automatic. If your gears are too high with a manual, you can sometimes burn through clutches, because you have to slip them to get the truck rolling. All that is for street driving, which is my guess since you are running 22" rims.

If you plan to off road your truck, then I would definitely opt for the 4:56's. It will allow you to utilize the power band much better than if you left the stock gears in there.

You don't "have" to do anything, but these would be my suggestions.

I'm betting you will want at least 4.56's as the truck will feel really sluggish to you with the stock set.

Give it a try with the stock set (what do you have, anyway?) but I think you'll notice right away you need a better torque multiplier set of gears.

I would go with gears anyways if not you'll see a huge drop in gas mileage and power plus you also have to consider the extre weight from 22" rims on top of the 37" meats. I think you could potentially get away without gears, but you could also potentially notice a lot more wear on parts as everything is working a lot harder to spin that tire especially if its a daily driver. Overall if it where me Id save yourself the head-ache and just bite the bullet and buy the gears the first time around.

Yea you cannot go with the 4.88s since they do not make them for the front axle. You will only have the rear but you cannot do that. I think the 4.56s would be a good thing to do so the truck will still run well and have the pick up like stock.

Is it an automatic? If so and you want the transmission to last yes I would say you would want around 4.10 gears.
