please help! Can I back probe injectors for a pulse? Should I use a multi-meter, 3-volt, 5-volt or 12-volt test light.

How do you test coil on plug engines for spark?

Testing for an injector pulse can be done with a test light connected to ground. One side of the connecter will have 12V anytime the key is on and the other side should pulse when the engine is cranked or running. I'd just use a regular spark tester to check the coil operation.

Okay. I tested the fuel injector with a test light. placing a 12v test light across the connector (disconnected from the injector) shows a injector pulse. So I must be getting some type of crank signal [to control frequency of pulse] and I have power to the injectors. I have feul pressure.

I do not have a spark tester so I have not yet checked for spark. Can I test for a spark signal using a DMM at the coil? Any instructions would be useful.

I next want to test the cam sensor. no codes are set when the sensor is connected and I do get a code if I crank with the sensor not connected.

I disconnected the wire harness at the sensor anc checked for voltage. I have 4.97v at one terminal and 5v at the second with Key-on. The third terminal shows continuity to ground - but there is some resistance. Can I test the cam sensor operation with a DMM? If so how?

okay. took both valve covers off again and lined up crank at TDC and the right side (passenger) does not have the V8 at the top. I'm going to take off the front cover and re-time the chain.

How can I determine which way to rotate the right cam for proper alignment? I'm guessing it is the shortest distance - which would be clockwise. can I tell #1 exhaust stroke (TDC) by looking at the cam springs? #1 is the front cylinder on the passenger side on this engine - isn't it?

built a wedge to block the chain into place and removed the cam gear. Rotated the cam until the V8 mark was at the 12 o'clock position. replaced the cam gear and torque into place - removed the wedge.

Engine started and ran fine. Still a small ticking sound. Much better than before. I'm guessing a stuck/slow lifer on #1 cylinder. I can live with it for now.
