Default New to me Dodge with a few issues (Help)

1997 Dodge Ram....Extended cab...Laramie edition....5.2 engine...automatic....4x4...255000 miles,

Got this dodge on a trade a week ago and need help fixing some of its issues.
First main issue is a check engine light. Went to autozone and the 2 codes that came up were a #2 clyinder misfire and a "random" misfire. The guy I got it off of said he put new plugs in it a day before I got it to fix the issue but it didn't work. Where do I start? Which cylinder is #2 and can I swap its coil pack with another cylinder to see if the misfire moves? Coil pack location? Is there a quick way to find out which of the many posibilities problem causers it is? All help and advice is welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

edit: Seems to have a hanging idle. Started it up and when I give it a little gas and let up it will take a second to drop from the current rpm. This is observed while in park.

Welcome to the Z.

you can't swap coils cause there is only one coil. did he do new plug wires too? if not, i'd swap those out. and while in there, might as well do cap and rotor. try those first and see what happens.

on a sidenote, do you trust the guy that he actually put new plugs in? just checking. regardless what someone tells me when i buy a vehicle, i check everything i can, within the first few days/weeks. i like to know i have a good baseline to go by when problems crop up.

Thanks for the reply. I double checked one of the plugs up front and it looked brand new so I do believe he changed them. He didnt change the plug wires or anything else. Is there anbything to changing the cap and rotor? Never done one before. As for the coil packs I looked for ever because the lady at advance auto said this ram had them and they were interchangable. Anyways.... I will get the wires today. Also the cap and rotor if there somewhat simple to swap out?

I have a 99 Ram 5.2, and the coil is over near the alternator. Youll see what looks exactly like a spark plug wire coming off of it. And as for the distributor cap and rotor, Id do that if I were you and see what happens. Theyre not too expensive either, but theyre a pain to get to. If you take off your air filter box on top of your motor, youll see it tucked back there with the spark plug wires going to it. As for the rotor, its underneath the distributor which simply comes off by like three or four clips. Idk how much experience you have with motors, etc. but you might want to pick up a Haynes service manual from the auto parts store. Theyre about $20.00 and they have everything you can imagine in them, and theyre made especially for your vehicle.

Thanks for the info. Im mechanically inclined just very hesitant in diving into things without having all the knowlege first. ....Ok bought plug wires, cap and rotor today. Will install later tonight or tomorrow morning. I have a second issue that maybe connected to the first problem "misfire". If it turns out not to be related I'll start a new thread so this one stays on topic. When I got the truck the coolant resovoir was very low. I filled it up and a few days later its all the way at the bottom again. Today I filled it up to full and drove about 50 miles and looked underneith the hood and the coolant is about half way down. Checked the oil and its a little low if anything so its not going there. Dont see any apparant leaks or anything. Will pull #2 spark plug and see if I can smell coolant on it. Where could all the coolant be going? Where should I be looking? MAJOR CONCERN

Please all help is very appreciated

Hmm, Id start by checking your radiator hoses for leaks, cracks, etc. Have you tried checking the coolant in the radiator itself?
