Default Tuner and Octane Questions for you Modaholics

OK guys so I have added a CAI (aFe stage II) and will be getting a mufflex kit soon to help with the breathing out the back.

I have read alot about tuners but there seems to be some mixed opinions so
I wanted to ask the experts:

1. Is there a tuner out there that will not leave a "footprint" thus voiding my warranty?

2. What tune and octane are you running to get the most MPG gains?

3. What tune and octane are you running to get the most performance gains?


My intent is to improve my MPG's, but also to gain a little extra power if possible. I have a feeling the addition of the CAI has thrown the air/fuel ratio out of whack and therefore presenting the need for a tuner to adjust to the right mixture.

Well this will be a good discussion thread, there are many identical here.

From what I've read and from listening to the many owners of programers here you'll gain minimal mpg and would probably not see a $$ return on the cost of the programer for many years. Fuel savings is measured across all the improvements you add to the truck, CAI, opening up the exhaust, better driving habits and if you add the tuner modified fuel metering.

Again long term you will find gains, but don't expect major changes. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the reply.

I have seen many threads going back and forth just about the warranty issue but also notice alot of people running varying octanes.

Just wondering if one os more for performance and one is more for MPG?

Also, seems like the DSP will not leave a footprint if you set it back to factory tune prior to a dealership visit. Anyone have experience with this?

I dont know about the 2010 ram's, but in my 06 i noticed instant gains. I have put about 3 tanks of fuel through the truck since i installed the 87 perf tune and have been getting 18-19mpg on the HWY. I was getting around 16.5-17ish before that. I drive 100 miles round trip to work 3 times a week. Power is there at the low end, but its not crazy, the brakes feel more reactive, it also did a trans perf tune, but i really didnt notice any change. I drive about 5 over the speed limit and don't gas it off the line and use cruise control and thats the way i drove before the tune.

Maybe its just me but i've seen enough gains off the bat to justify the purchase of the tuner. 1-3MPG increase over the life of your truck is decent gain. Given a 1MPG increase if i fill up my tank from bone dry at 26 gallons thats 26 extra miles per tank. I fill up 2-3 times per week. So lets say on the low end i fill up 2 times a week thats an extra 52 miles a week x 4 weeks = 208 miles extra a month. With gas at 3.76 in my area it cost me rougly $92 to fill her up. 208 miles is about a half of tank of gas for me so thats $46 dollars a month x 12 months = $552 over the first year of ownership. So with in 7 months its paid for its self. I may be wrong with math sorry, but i think overall its a worth while investment.

if your looking for optimum mpg's I would say diablo (I usually push superchips on lightly modded apps)...only because you can get custom tuning for it which would make the motor more efficient...
