Default Multiple issues with a '96 Ram.

I recently bought a 1996 RAM 1500 5.9L V8, I have found a few problems the previous owner neglected to tell about.

  1. Gas gauge not showing correct level (he said it may have to do with a fuse or ground, I have a feeling he was B.S.-ing us)
  2. Driver seat goes forward, up and down, (via control on left side of seat), but wont go back.
  3. Power windows do not work, cant raise or lower.
  4. Power locks will lock but not unlock.
thanks, Matt

I now know why the power windows aren't working, no fuse. I didn't know this for sure before because I couldn't find the owners manual with the diagram, now I'm thinking "is there a reason there is no fuse?", I hope nothing goes wrong when I get a new one to put in it. I hope he didnt take the fuse out to hide a problem, he claimed they worked fine.

EDIT* well, it does have a fuse, and it appears to be a working fuse, I swapped the power windows 30amp fuse with the power seats fuse and it still don't work. I'm thinking its either bad motors or a wiring problem, more likely a wiring problem I would think, being that both doors arent working, but i'm no mechanic, I'm wondering if I should remove the panels and check connections. The passenger door panel was loose missing screws, I put some other screws in it though

ok, wasn't a fuse or wiring, the windows work, I had to put a new battery in the truck this morning, the old one was about dead. That takes care of the windows, now does anyone know if there is a way to slide the seat back if the power seats is not working right? is there a release or something?

So what other issues are you having now since you replaced the battery?

I found out the reason for the seat not going back is because the "horizontal" motor is only spinning one way, its not the switch because I shaved the plastic stopper off one of the vertical motor connectors with a utility knife and tried the motor on a different switch, so the end result told me it was the horizontal seat motor. I actually had the motor completely disassembled and didnt see any signs of anything that looked like it would cause it not to spin both ways.

I completely disassembled the horizontal seat motor, cleaned the brushes and the thing they run against (as I heard it can resurrect a potentially dead motor), put it back together and it still only goes one way, I don't know what to do about it.

Clean the contacts in the switch, there may be something insulating the contact points ( spilled coffee or soda or whatever else ) also check voltage comming from the switch to see if you are getting power ( simular to an ON-OFF-ON type switch) one side will supply power to the forward movement and the other side will supply power to the reverse movement. Put a test light or meter on the center connector and test the wire on either side as the switch is pressed in that direction and it should light or register on the meter.
