I have been doing a lot of research into this cheap mod, and I have come to the conclusion that I am going to stay away from it for several reasons. The first being that the computers in our trucks are programmed to run most efficiently around 200ish degrees, and running cooler can actually negatively impact fuel efficiency. Also, most motor oils are formulated to be run around 200 degrees and running cooler can actually reduce the oils lubricating properties. There is a widely held belief in many circles that this can actually prevent burnoff of carbon and other contaminants and lead to engine sludge. I know, running hotter can also negatively impact the oil, but from what I have read, this is most noticeable in vehicles running WOT, and in which cases, a larger radiator would have more reduction in temps than the thermostat.

Going to a lower temp thermostat is actually a very old school idea dating back to well before ECU's and modern engine building techniques. They were often swapped in during the summer and out in winter to help regulate the engines for varying seasons.

To each his own, I just wanted to encourage everyone to do a little more research into this if you are considering it. I hope I didn't spark a heated debate here.

Should be the same p/n but the guy at the counter can cross reference for you. Anyone planning this mod can expect to knock it out in about 15 mins.

2 bolts hold on the tstat housing
A drain pan to catch any coolant
Swap the rubber gasket over to the new tstat
Reverse the procedures for install
Top off your coolant
After a day or so of driving check coolant level

I have the Jet 180* thermostat in my truck and love it. Letting the engine stay just a bit cooler seems to help keep the truck in its power zone. What I have noticed living here in Texas is that ( especially during summer months) when the truck has been running a while and the engine heatsoaks you can feel your truck losing power. Don't feel that with the 180*! no negative side effects during the winter either. Fuel mileage slightly better than with the factory 195*. Ok correct me if I am wrong on this.... In older cars the higher temps were used to burn off and prevent carbon build up. In modern cars and trucks detergent motor oils serve this same purpose. From what I have read you won't hurt anything unless you lower it all the way to 160*. if anyone is concerned about carbon build up then I highly recommend a treatment with Seafoam. I have used it and that stuff will blow that damn carbon right through your tail pipes! The 180* tstat is not a cure all but it sure does help!

Smile

If you use a cheap stat you might get a code.
If you use a Jet stat you wont.

There are a million reasons to change out the stock 203 degree stat.
Heres a few.
Before swap:
Engine temp 201.
Oil temp 204.
Oil pressure 29-PSI.
Intake air temp:118 degrees.
After:
Engine oil temp:183-185.
Oil temp:179 degrees. 25 degrees cooler.
Intake air 102 degrees.
Oil pressure:37PSI. 20% improvement.

I cannot find the transmission numbers but they were even more dramatic.
Benifits:
Less engine detonation great for towing.
For every 10% cooler intake air supposed to be good for 1% increase in hp.
Maybe only 3.9 hp gain but ill take it.
Better oil pressure what more do you need to say.
A cooler transmission what can i say.
Oil at 204 degrees is like boiling water.LOL.
It does not do a good job of removing engine heat, and it does not lubricate any better either.
I ran a 180 stat on my 2003 2500 Hemi ram for 7 years winter and summer,
towing a tandem dump trailer 5 days a week.I found no problems with this mod.
Anyone can use ther evic and they will get similar numbers, dont take my word for it.
