Default Engine surges, idles high

I have a 2001 1500 with 162k on it and I have noticed that from time to time the engine when at idle, surges to about 1200rpm, back down and then up again. It does it even when in gear.Engine light hasn't come on, could the ECM be throwing a code anyway? Need help

check your IAC and make sure it's working properly and doesn't have any carbon buildup. or maybe the TB just needs a good cleaning. you might have a small vacuum leak that the computer is trying to compensate for. i usually spray a bit of Carb cleaner around any gaskets (like TB, intake) and vacuum lines to see if the engine runs different. if it does, something has a hole that needs fixing.

good luck!

I tried cleaning the IAC and it solved the problem but now its back again. I wonder if the IAC is worn out and just needs replacing?

I say replace it. Have you check all your vaccum lines, clean you tb with seafoam make sure you pull your pcv valve and clean that up aswell.

Vacccum lines check, seafoamed the engine/TB, and all seems well for now. Went ahead and bought the IAC but will wait to install and see if the seafoam worked. Thanks for the advice

having a similar problem when at idle, feels like vehicle is shaking every few seconds. have checked vaccuum lines and haven't found a leak, what do you mean by seafoaming?

SEA FOAM (white can with red letters) Its a great liquid cleaning product that cleans your fuel lines when poured into fuel tank, oil sludge when poured into crank, valves, tb and manifoldwhen poured into air intake system. When poured through you throttle body with truck running engine sucks it in, let it sit for 10 min while it breaks all the gunk off then it shoots it out the tailpipe when you turn your ram on at high idle. That's realy it in a nutshell.

You'll find the liquid at your auto parts store,
