Default Bore scope to check plenum gasket

Hi all,

My truck has been using a lot of oil (about 1 quart per 300 miles) and pinging like crazy, so I assumed the plenum gasket was gone. I tried the vacuum check after plugging the pcv valve and there was pressure, not vacuum in the breather hose. This indicated an intact gasket???

My mechanic friend suggested that I borrow his bore scope to look inside the intake. It is a long, thin flexible rod with a small tv screen on the end if you have not seen one before. If you have had endoscopy at the doctor's office then you know what I am talking about. I was able to pass this down through the throttle body and look right at the plenum plate where it meets the manifold. I could see a piece of broken gasket projecting into the plenum space and oil on the pan. The scope was covered with oil after snaking around the floor of the manifold. So much for the vacuum test.

The borrowed scope was an expensive Snap-on tool. Harbor Freight has a cheap one for about $100 and they often have sales with 20% or so off. I can't vouch for the quality or the view you might get.

This is a nice trick if you want proof before going through the trouble of removing your intake manifold or don't want to take off the throttle body to look inside. The view with the naked eye through the throttle body is pretty limited. You could also pass a piece of hose down into the intake and see how oily it looks when you remove it and skip the viewing part. This would probably be proof enough. Some just say that if you have a Magnum engine and are pinging and losing oil then you have proof enough.

I have ordered the Hughes aluminum plenum plate and gasket kit.
