Default Anybody Change Their Own Oil???

When I got the truck home I crawled under it to see if changing my own oil is going to be easy.

Looks like the drain plug has no interference with dumping the oil. The filter looks pretty easy also (straight up and enough room to get at it).

Anybody have any problems changing the filter without dumping oil all over the truck and yourself? I've read somewhere to loosen it up, just slip a clear plastic bag over it and unscrew it till it drops in the bag. Anybody try this. Makes sense to me.

I have a long time before I need to change it. Only 700 miles on the truck so far. I'm going to change it at 3000 miles, then every 5000 miles using a Wix filter and Mobil 1 Synthetic. I've been doing that for years in all my new vehicles.

I go by the miles not what the computer thinks I should do.

Thanks for any info on what I should watch out for to make it nice and easy changing the filter.

I've always changed my own oil. I did my first change at 5,000kms. It's pretty easy and although I never tried the bag thing I think its a pretty good idea and should work. It was a bit messy once I got it loose. The only issue is that the factory filter is on real good, it took alot of effort to get it off. The oil from the engine does drain right into the catch pan and does not get onto anything underneath. Your choice of oil & filter sounds good, I use Amsoil 0W20 extended range and a UAP NAPA Gold (WIX) filter.

Thanks to both you, and ND RAM for the tip, never heard of that. I'm gonna need to try that trick on my wife's Mustang. The RAM has lifetime oil changes from the dealer.

I change my own oil. The plastic bag over the oil filter works, just make sure its pushed up high enough. Yes the stock filter and usually any time the dealer puts one on they are on there super tight, even with a filter wrench they can be a bear. I have also used a 1 gallon milk/water jug cut about 1 or 2 inches up from the bottom to catch the oil from the filter.

How tight are you guys putting the filter back on? As tight as you can get it by hand? Also, is there a torque spec for the drain bolt? Thanks

I do mine as tight as I can get it by hand, I put it on put the drain plug in and then oil, then OCD kicks in and I go back under and make sure its all snugged up and nice and tight. Maybe RamTech could speak to the torque on the drain plug but I just put it on and tighten it down. The wife's Charger has a Fumato quick drain valve on it, so thats just a matter of open and close.
