Default 2011 Ram painted interior

Tools needed:

T20 torx screwdriver(T15 actually fit better for me)
Phillips head screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
600 grit sandpaper
rubbing alcohol
microfiber towel
painters tape
newspaper
paint of your choice(I used duplicolor chrysler bright white)
clear(I don't like the duplicolor clear but it works if you want)

What I did:

I wanted to paint every piece that came silver from the factory. I started with the steering wheel (It's not necessary, but better safe than sorry, first disconnect the battery). Next, take your flathead screwdriver and pry up gently on the pieces in the steering wheel. Mine have EVIC controls in them so I disconnected the wiring harness and took the buttons out. Then I went to the vents. I used the flathead again to pry up from the bottom. Once it is loose use your hands to pull the whole piece, vent and all, out. I found it was easier to work from the bottom up. Be carefull not to break the clips. Once out you can disassemble the vent from the surround. I then tackled the center consols. The manual calls for a T20 screwdriver, but for mine T15 seemed to fit perfect. Anyway, remove the tray insert on the top where it says dodge to reveal the torx screws

Then pop off the trim piece surrounding the 115v plug. Mine has carbon fiber on it but here is its location.

There is another screw behind there. Remove the tray liner towards the front on the center console and take out the two phillips screws. You are ready to pull apart the dash. It is held on by 13 retaining clips so just use a little elbow grease and yank. It will snap off. Unplug all the wires and you are set.

To get the cener console off remove the shifter(no intructions here, depends on your shifter) and remove the chrome trim ring. It has clips so just pull it up.
Now this piece is ready so just pull up.

Wipe everything down with rubbing alcohol. Be sure to get all your dash dressing off or the tape won't stick. Tape off the console pieces with the painters tape. You can use regular masking tape but it will leave a residue. Tape it off well, but if you do have any overspray you can always take it off with thinner and a qtip. I then took my 600 grit to all silver pieces for prep. It doesn't have to be major, just rough up the surface a bit. Wipe off again.

Paint:
Make sure you have a well ventilated area. I layed everything out on a table and used a spray can of duplicolor in a side to side motion. Spray the first couple layers on very light. Slowly getting heavier coats until you are satisfied with the coverage. Never get closer than 8-10 inches or you risk getting runs. The duplicolor dries quick so just a minute or two between coats is plenty. Once you are satisfied, let it dry for about 15 minutes. Then hit is with a few coats of clear. I hit mine with 3, just enough to let it shine a little. Let the pieces dry about 15-30 minutes, depending on heat, humidity, etc. Slowly pull off the tape. Give the pieces another 30-60 minutes to dry fully so you dont smudge them trying to put them in. Basically reverse every step we did to disassemble them. Be careful to put the bottom shifter console on before the dash. If you have any residue from the masking tape give it a few days for the paint to fully cure and then use some rubbing alcohol to remove the sticky.

It sounds long and drawn out, but it really isnt. Me and a friend did it in about 3 hours, including beer, basketball, and painting my shifter as well. Here is the during and after pics.

Great job, wish there were more shots before and after that would give us more confidence to pry our dashes and steering wheel apart.

It was actually really easy. It's kind of depressing how easy it is to take the interior of our RAM TOUGH trucks apart! lol

Well I figured every 4th gen ram has the silver accents from the factory so no reason to post before and after pics but I can if you want. Just lemme know what pics you would like to see and I will scrounge them up from my computer

Thanks, when I started getting heavy into this site and modding I saw 916Timmy's exhaust thread and Maddogs mod thread and thought now that is actually helpful for once so I am trying to follow in their footsteps by actually giving something that is helpful vs. showing what I just did. lol

My favorite part:

"Me and a friend did it in about 3 hours, including beer, basketball, and painting my shifter as well."

Nothing like a little liquid courage to ease the pucker factor of removing your dash and steering wheel electronics. Nice job. Thanks for the great detail and write up.
