re-vamping a dead thread here to spark the conversation back up. Upon further review here is what I have come down to deciding.

1998-2001 Ram 4x4 5.9
1999+ Silverado/Sierra Z71 4x4 5.3 or 4.8

Ram is more menacing in my opinion and I like the style more in and out. My step dad has had great luck with his 98 5.9 so it makes me want to believe they are reliable but I keep hearing horror stories.

The Silverado/Sierra would get better mileage and actually make more power and torque with more towing capacity(i dont tow so I dont care) and much much better passing power. The quality seems to be greatly improved in 1999 and the interior is decent. I don't like the styling or the interior like I do the ram but they seem to be bulletproof trucks and get slightly better mileage.

Overall the decision is still up in the air. I think if I could know that I was getting a good non-abused ram then I would prolly end up in the dodge but that really raises a bigger question.

Which of the two is a better bet if you have to assume that it's been abused and beaten on? (Which you have to if you are buying a 10 yr old truck) I mean which is more likely to still be in good shape outside of what you can tell by inspecting it a little? I know the 5.9 is pretty tough but the 5.3 is based off the ls1 in the vette/camaro and it is about as solid as a motor gets...the transmissions seem to be the weak spots on both...

I have had a mid 90's chevy and they are literally indestructable and u can do almost anything to them custom wise they have thousands upon thousands of aftermarket parts so they can be on the road forever. I love dodges this is my 2nd 1500 my only complaint is that the transmission r not the greatest out there particularly due to the electronic shifting. i was hooked on the styling of the body and the huge interiors and with some budget builds horsepower tv took a 5.9 360 block drop about 2k in budget parts and made a near 500 hp sleeper motor which did almost 60 more than the budget 350 they did!!!! but both trucks in my opinion have placed their stake in the history of bad A$$ trucks. BESIDES ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN A FORD!!!!!!!!
