Default Why would they design exhaust this way?

So today we finally had a little sun so I decided to do a little more badge removal and minor scratch repair on my Ram. Once finished I thought I'd take a look underneath since I've seen all these great pictures of exhaust setups and thought I'd might as well get some ideas of what I can do.

Looking up where the 2 exhaust pipes running back from the cats, I was expecting to see a Y connection of some sort. I was disgusted when I saw 2 3" pipes reduced and sandwiched in to 1 1/2" pipes and continue on down back to a 3" pipe feeding the muffler.

Really how many more penies would it have cost them to put in somewhat of a real Y pipe! talk about restricting the flow even more than necessary.

So it looks like my exhaust setup is going to cost me more than I had first though. I was going to drop in a mufflex 18 but now since it looks like I'm going to be cutting so I may as well go straight back to 2 individual 18" magnaflows.

Thinking dodge should hire some of the folks off Ramforumz to help with building a real Ram Hemi that would take full advantage of its power.

Loth

just remove and replace your y-pipe with a magnaflow y-pipe and then replace your stock muffler with a strait thru SI/DO muffler.

the factory y design is just stupid. whoever designed it and approved it is obvisously a bean counter and not a hp freak.

A new Y-Pipe costs about $27 delivered to your front door. Add the muffler of your choice and it will be all smiles. See below for the inexpensive resolution to this problem (the same path I plan to take for now).

Everything costs more in Canada.... Eh!

Was quoted $500 to just do an 18" Magnaflow here in Calgary and that doesn't even account for changing the Y.

Can someone confirm our rams are only 2 1/4 outs not 2 1/2?

Thanks.

Loth

They are 2 1/4 out. The 12288 is an 18" Magnaflow. I installed it a few weeks ago. Left the stock Y in for now. Things are more expensive out west for sure, I had the muffler installed for 240 cash at my local garage, they do all repairs but specialize in custom exhaust. How far to drive south of the 49th and have one installed in the U.S.?

Correct me if I am wrong but I was looking at the 12288 and it is listed as 3"/2.5" not 2.25... The 12278 has the 2.25 outs.. Now I'm Hellas confused!

A good 4hrs in to middle of nowhere Montana. For what I'll burn in gas I may as well pay the premium locally. I'm going to check some of the smaller towns around Calgary to see if I can negotiate better rates.

Really want that factory Y outta there more so then the stock muffler at this point!

The thread that RazorBass posted is mine, so let me know if you have any questions.....the setup I built works pretty good and only cost me a total of 250 US dollars!
