More power=less load=better mpg. That's why even though they're all rated the same, the hemi normally beats the v6 and 4.7 in actual fuel economy

I had 2 Dakotas before I got the Ram. The V6 one got worse MPG than the V8 it was always downshifting and over working. 3000 miles on the Ram worse MPG was 12.9 in the winter using 4WD. Now mostly highway best I have got is 17. Driving very very conservative. Drive the 350z like a mad man 22MPG.

3 things -

1 - Do not look at the gas mileage yet. In the first few thousand miles, the truck is going through all kinds of changes. Break it in....then start checking the mileage.

2 - If you change fuels, you will need at least 2 full tanks run through before you can get reliable information about how it is affecting power/mileage/etc.

3 - A louder exhaust 'usually' compels you to add that little extra throttle just so you can hear it. After all, that's why you install a 'louder' exhaust.... This compelling action does have a mileage consequence.....but you already knew that.

I went from about 450km/tank (98 litres) in the winter, using a lot of 4wd, to just over 600km/tank in the summer. My gas mileage went up around the 10,000 km mark. I drive about 65/35 hwy/city.

Default That doesn't sound right.

I have a 4.7L in my 2011 QC1500 4x4 and from day one In January have not gotten worse than 14mpg city and that was in January at freezing temperatures. Combined it jumps to 17-18 and highway around 20. The Hemi does better on the highway but the 4.7L does better in town. Unless of course, your heavy on the gas.

I have the same truck and mine did the same thing when she was brand spankin new. IT gets better. Take her on the highway for a quick 1 or 2 hour trip and it'll level right out. Im getting 17/18 MPG now, nearly all in city.

hopefully your mpg will creep up for you. just wanted to say congrats on your new ride. also, we have an 04 grand cherokee with the 4.7 engine, we have owned since new, has a little more than 160000 miles on it and still runs flawlessly. some say these engines are prone to have sludge problems with out regular oil changes. to prevent this problem, i have changed oil and filter every 4000 miles with mobil one. i know this is apple to oranges, but her commute is 60 miles round trip. the first 20 miles is stop and go and she averages 17.4 mpg for the week.
