i have an 01 ram 2500 8L v10 with the 5 speed auto. when it is cool/cold it does not like to shift from first or second gear, it likes to whine to around 2k in first and second then shift. could this be due to a clogged trans filter?
Most likely a 47RE transmission. DB had their fingers deep into its development. They weren't, for what ever arrogant reason, worried about longevity and became a little problematic. Chrysler engineers so the story goes, more or less got into it with DB and told them it wasn't enough gear box... the 48RE took its place. If you're over 70K, chances are you're ready for some internal parts.
Also on cold mornings they will run up to 2000 rpms before shifting to help get the temps up. You should find this in your owners manual. If you are reving the engine and going no where then you could be slipping the tranny. If the problem goes away after the trans warms up then in no way are you slipping the tranny. The 47re is a weak tranny stock..but there are build kits that make them tougher then nails.... Good Luck
Something to help maybe... I had the filter and oil changed at 30K and replaced witih synthetic oil in our diesel ram. I was shocked how much better the damned thing shifted! I mentioned it to someone on this site and they told me it makes one hell of a difference!
It might be worth your time to dump a few bucks into some oil and a filter and see what happens!
