I pulled a buddy's boat without the tow/haul. The only time that i used it was when i was pulling the boat out of the water on the boat ramp. The truck never had an issue pulling it.

I have pulled several loads around 3-4K pounds through hills, not mountains, but the Ozarks, and averaged around 15 mpg. This was driving 60-65 mph. I have yet to us the tow haul on a long trip. I set the cruise and go. The truck downshifts on some hills, but doesn't hunt, just shifts back to OD once I crest the hill.

I used the tow haul pulling about 2K pounds in freezing rain, so there was ice on the road and 4wd, and I got about 10-11 mpg. To me, that sounds like it was your culprit.

The only other question I have for you is what gears are in your rear diff? I have the 3.55's for comparison.

I just pulled my camper through the Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri. The drive was very curvy and up and down the hills. Now my camper is a 25ft wieghs about 8,500 pounds. Of course I turned my tow haul on for this trip but I ended up getting 9.1 mpg. I didn't think that was too bad of mpg seeing as how heavy the trailer was and the road conditions. Also my gears are 3:92 LSD. So I was really impressed with the mpg. I was also impressed on how good my truck pulled the camper. The truck never seemed to have any problem with the hills. There where several hills that had 19 and 20 degree grades and the truck just kept pulling never loosing speed or having any trouble. I have also pulled my brothers camaro (after it broke down a day after he was making fun of me for buying a dodge) for about 40 miles on semi flat/hill roads without the tow haul and had no problem. Just like everyone else has said it all depends on the terain and how your transmision is acting.

I have 3.92s and LSD.....guess I'll have to be the judge when we leave this Saturday. Who knows.....but I doubt I'll be taking cross country trips at 9-10 MPG very often

Thanks for the advice/guidance.....now I have to re plan my route since North Dakota is still flooded and the 2 possible highways through Minot are ...hummm....under water. Those poor folks!....I feel for them!...been pretty bad here in South Saskatchewan....BUT DAMN!......not like that .
