Default Son of Thunder

Im hoping this is the right area for build threads, Here goes, As said in my newbie checkin thread i bought a 1981 Dodge Ram Custom SE in june. Now this truck is my third Dodge full size truck but its my first Ram. The previous two trucks were a 1973 Dodge D100 Adventurer Sport and a 64 Dodge D200 Stepside. The D100 is the truck im going to try to build this Ram into a tribute truck to. The D100 was a project that my dad and i built when i was in high school for me to drive to school with rather then taking the bus. Along the way the truck was dubbed Thunder. The main reason for this was mostly due to what it had under the hood.

Here were the original specs of this truck as it came from the factory:
Slant 6
4 speed trans
unknown rear diff
8 ft long box
bare bones interior.

Here were the specs when it was completed:
318 V8 from a Dodge Aspen stock car
original 4 speed from the slant 6 originally
'Cuda 4 speed transmission with pistol grip shifter after slant 6 transmission fragged
bucket seats from a 'cuda
American Racing torque thrust D rims
Dodge 8 3/4 axle
Autometer tach mounted under the dash in place of ash tray.
Dual exhaust including Headers, exhaust dumps and Flowmaster 40 mufflers with turn down tips.

Now as for the engine specs im not clear on what was all done to the motor since it was built for dads Stock car originally and i wasnt around for that particular engine build. What i do recall is that it made around 450 Hp at the rear wheels in the truck. The specs of the engine that i do know from looking at it were:

Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
Edelbrock Performer heads
unknown size Holley Dominator carb

Thats about all i knew of it, more then likely it was bored out and had all sorts of hidden speed tricks done to it. I cannot ask my father since he passed away in 2001 shortly after Thunder was completed. The only reason i no longer have this truck was because a now former friend stole it one night and totaled it off.

Now on to the planned build for the '81 Ram aka Son of Thunder

Current specs

318 LA V8
Torqueflite 904 transmission
Stock dodge rear end (not sure which model yet but will check sometime this week as well as confirming it has the 904 and not the 727, everything i have read so far has pointed to it having the 904 due to being light duty)
bare bones interior
truck was originally silver and blue and i believe it was a fleet truck for a local propane vendor.

Mods done to truck so far:

Dual exhaust with Cherry bomb turbo mufflers (done by previous owner)
Dodge CD/Cassette deck from '93 Plymouth Grand voyager
stereo wiring harness created using original radio harness plugs from voyager and using after market wires
Spare tire carrier removed to allow use of Delta cross box
Delta cross box
Seat cover (previous owner)
truck painted flat black

Planned mods:

360 LA V8 built to similar specs as what was used in the Dodge Lil Red Express with some differences
Lunati Voodoo Cam instead of the 340 cam used in the lil red express engine
'308 casting heads instead of the lil reds E58 heads
Edelbrock Performer RPM Air intake
850 cfm carb like lil red or a 700 CFM EFI or carb as recommended by Lunati
2400 RPM stall converter
rebuilt Torqueflite 904 with shift kit
regear and add locker to stock rear end
white wagon wheels in the same sizes as the lil red express
similar tire sizes as used on lil red express
Cargo style canopy
spare tire carrier reinstalled in factory location.
Battery relocated to right rear of truck box, second battery added in left rear of truck box
Shaved tail gate
Roll pan with hidden receiver hitch welded to chassis behind it and flip up plate mount to hide receiver when not in use
Cadillac Deville tail lights with rectangular fog lights used as reverse lights.
Possible addition of mesh to roll pan to hide reverse lights.
replace the rusted out doors and front fenders
repaint the truck in Acura Thunder Grey metallic paint to match the '94 Acura Integra that it shares the driveway with
Rear end lowered 2" with shackle drop

No new pics at this time but i will repost the pics from the intro thread to at least have some pics in here.

Hood popped open so i can take pics of the current engine bay.

Dirty old 318

Hmmm ok from what im reading about iding the transmissions and differentials used in these trucks it appears i have both a Torqueflite 727 installed in the truck and i have a spare torqueflite 904 sitting in the box. And from what i read the 9.25" rear diff has a 12 bolt diff cover on it. The diff in the truck does have a 12 bolt cover but the shape of the cover doesnt match the image i have for the 9.25. It looks like a combination of the rounded 8.25 diff cover with the sharp edged lower section of the 9.25 cover. I will post pics of both the transmissions and the diff in a moment i need to upload them to my comp.

Ok as promised here are the pics. Hopefully im correct on my identification of the transmissions at least..

What diff is this? I can not seem to find anything remotely similar

This is the transmission i believe is a Torqueflite 904 it is a spare that came with the truck.

This is the transmission in the truck currently from what i can tell it appears to be a Torqueflite 727. The pan is a different shape from the spare and the pics i have looked at indicate the spare is a 904 and this one is a 727 am i correct on the ID?

Forgot to add here is a pic of the CD/Cassette player i added to the truck. There was a cheap aftermarket deck in it when i first got it but it was wired up incorrectly and got fried. I have since wired in the same harness plugs used in newer and higher trim rams and other dodge vehicles. I cut them out of the same voyager that gave up its stereo for the truck. Honestly this is prob the most i will ever need for a stereo in this truck. The plan is to make a plate to mount 2 3.5" or 4" speakers in the dash in place of the original 4x10 single speaker. there are currently 2 6x9s in the rear in some hacked up sub boxes. Those will be replaced by proper wedge boxes and better quality 6x9s.
