Default 2500 Tow Capacity

Am I crazy or does 12,950 max tow capacity for my truck sound crazy low? It is a 2007 2500 Mega Laramie, 5.9 Cummins. GCWR is only 20,000?!? My 1/2 ton Ford can do almost that!! What gives? What can I do to boost capacity? The trailer I want to haul is 11,500 UVW. Please advise before I buy buy something I can not haul.

Thanks!

Its because its a mega cab. In my opinion they are as big of a mistake as the PT cruiser
There isnt anything you can do to legally boost the tow rating. It is what it is. You can haul over that rating, the motor will handle it, the only factor there is local laws and your insurance will not cover an accident should you have one while towing over weight

This is taken straight from a 2007 Chevy 2500 brochure:

"The added strength of the new frame and increased engine power have allowed Chevrolet to offer a 2.5-inch trailer hitch receiver, with a whopping 13,000 pounds of towing capacity. Adding a fifth-wheel hitch will boost the maximum allowable trailer to 16,700 pounds."

So does a fifth wheel change the max allowable trailer weight? Both the Ford and the Chevy are rated in the same ballpark, is that based on standard hitch and not fifth wheel?

You can haul more with a 5th wheel then a bumper pull in most cases. Mega cab is pretty much the only exception to that case.
The payload on a 11 3500 dually is about 5k lbs, quad cab dually is abor 4600lbs and a mega cab dually's payload is 2800 lbs I think. It because of the length of the cab and the way the weight sits over the axle
