Default Heater Problems

Greetings,

I am having problems with my heater. It will not heat up at all unless it is running for 20+ minutes. It started near the end of winter up here (Alaska) and I want to try and get it fixed before winter hits again. Any advice? Thanks.

Hmmmmmm....sounds like your thermostat is taking too long to open. I can't think of anything else that would be a direct cause of that issue. Good news is a thermostat is cheap and relatively easy to change. That's what I would try first anyway. If your thermostat is not working properly even the slightest bit, it needs to be replaced anyway before it costs you your engine.

Unless it's different on your truck the tstat should be located in a little housing where the lower radiator hose meets the block. I think you take out two bolts and remove the whole housing to get to it. Just pop out old and throw in new. Only thing is you need to drain the coolant first or you are going to make a mess when you take the housing off. If you catch the coolant in a clean container you can reuse it.

Oh yeah, make sure you get the tstat back in oriented the right way and the gasket on it is intact. I'm not sure if there is a gasket between the housing and the block but there would probably have to be. The parts place or your dealer should be able to tell you.

So...before I did the tstat job, I had a few friends who worked on trucks check it out and found out that my heat only blows on the passenger side but not the driver side. I read a couple of the other threads on this site and I think it might be the heater core. Any thing else it might be? Thanks.

If you haven't already, read this.

http://www.heatertreater.net/Ram%2002-08%20Listing.html

If you have some time on your hands all of it is good info to have tucked away just in case but section 2 (blend door), specifically paragraph "b" seems like it may apply to you.

Failure of these HVAC doors seems fairly common on the Ram trucks. I didn't think about this before because even though I have read through that entire site before, my problem is the recirc door. I haven't bought one of these kits yet but I may eventually.

I think your problem is either the blend door or a clogged heater core and I would lean toward the blend door. Maybe trying the heater core and hose test as described on the website will help you determine. Good luck!

Thanks. That would be a good thing to look into.
