Default whos the idiot here?

So today when I first started working (I drive a dodge mini van around with xray equipment all day) I was going to pull out onto a pretty busy main road leaving the office parking lot. Well, the way I was going I could ONLY turn right because there is a big ditch as the median. Well, there were a couple cars coming so I waited for them, the whole time looking left since I was turning right. I usually glance to my right before turning out but this time I didn't mainly because the light down the road had just turned green so I was dead set on going as soon as the 2nd car passed. Well, as I started to turn I did glance to my right and I see a guy on a bike pretty much diving off of it and staring at me like I just shot his kids. If anything HE would have ran into the side of my van because if he was close enough to where I was going to run over him I would have def. saw him and waited (it happens all the time in Richmond). Anyway, who is the idiot here? I know when I was a kid (this was a grown man probably in his 40's) I would NEVER ride out infront of a stopped car unless they either waved me on or I knew for sure they saw me. This guy was riding the wrong way down a pretty busy street and obviously had no intentions of stopping when crossing in front of me.

Was I in the wrong for not looking harder to my right before pulling out in the only direction I could turn, to the right? I just waved at the guy as I kept on pulling out.

Just on a side note: Why do people insist on walking/running in the middle of the road when there is a perfectly good sidewalk that's safely away from moving traffic about 5 feet beside them? I know bikes aren't supposed to be on the sidewalk but these walkers/runners that I have to get halfway into the other lane to go around them are just retarded! I have even yelled out at a couple people "theres a sidewalk right there!" just to be an ass.

i am glad you said a person on a bike, not a motorcyclist
In california a cyclist is supposed to follow the same laws as a car & they think they are king sh*t & can do anything that they want
SPLAT!!

auto or truck wins & the law backs them

I echo GTYANKEE, As he said in CA, at least, bicyclists, are required to follow all the same rules of the road as motor vehicles, that means traveling in the right direction and on the correct side of the road and stopping for and obeying all traffic control devices.... But your states laws may vary

Here in NC it's the same. But they Bicyclists weave from one side to the other to avoid traffic. Now the professional cyclists seem to be much different.

Same as GT, that's always the way I understood it, cyclists are supposed to obey the same rules and if you can get the same ticket on a bicycle for being drunk as you can behind the wheel, same rules apply. I see it all the time here, cyclists riding against traffic, often times at night and just think to myself, that's an accident waiting to happen. As for why people don't make better use of sidewalks when they're available, your guess is as good as mine. See that all the time too. IMO, it's bad enough you have to be vigilant of other drivers, making sure you're watching them because chances are they're not watching you, same goes for the morons that would rather walk in the street than on the sidewalk. Reminds me of a safety poster we used to have at work. It was a picture of a big band aid and written across it said, stupid hurts.

I sure feel your frustration with cyclists. I recently had a very similar scenario, and the cyclist proceeded to tear me a new one. I politely reminded him that 'HE' was traveling it the wrong direction on the road, and pointed out that people like me that drive around in new shiny modded vehicles are generally quite cautious, as we want to keep our vehicles that way. I further pointed out that if he had hit my Ram, I would have to spend a lot of time, effort and cash to get it back to perfect condition....he, on the other hand....would heal! My comment was not taken well....

Same as above, the law around here is you must obey all the same traffic laws as automobiles. My cousin actually hit a guy on a bike a few years back that did exactly what happened to you. As I was a witness to the accident I got to smile and chuckle when the judge in traffic court ripped the bike rider apart and threw some major hefty fines at the guy as well as forced him to pay for the new paint job on my cousins truck.

Bicyclists must obey the traffic rules in my jurisdiction. In fact, he was going the wrong way and would have been at fault under the laws here.

I am pretty sure those same rules apply here in VA since VA is a commonwealth and we have 10X more laws then most states! I am glad I was not the idiot this guy made me out to be judging by his expression when he almost hit the side of my work van. This particular road didn't even have a sidewalk going down it which would tell me that I probably shouldn't have my bike on that road in the first place but who am i?
