Default 1997 Ram, engine shutting off when warmed up

Its a odd problem that is possibly believed to be the cat? It only happens when its warmed up and it just shuts off. Its not the fuel pump we know, it especially will happen when put in reverse. The truck will only move about 2 feet in reverse before shutting off. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Sorry ive been busy the past few days. It is from what im told a 5.9 so I posted it in the wrong section. However it is an automatic transmission and it is now backfiring when driven as well. It sounds like it should be an O2 sensor problem of some sort but it is not throwing any CELs

Could you by any chance just do a key diagnostics, you turn the key on-off-on-ff-on-ff-on and then the check engine light with blink a series of times record the blinks the individual number is seperated by a no blink so it will go for 12, blink.....blink blink

Next I think you should just go and do a vacuum test just incase the timing chain jumped or something else. Also try cleaning the throttle body and be sure to clean the IAC. Then report to me with anything and I can go from there.

Just for Gee Whiz, put a gauge on the fuel line port, you may be quite surprized. I once had an evil fuel pump, that refused to die properly, sometimes by putting the truck in gear I could knock it out, sometimes it would happen at a stop sign, sometimes it would go out after going down a hill and starting up the other side. This would be accompanied by backfiring out both ends, cutting out of cylinders, etc. the way we finally caught the culprit was by driving 85 miles one day, with a gauge held down by a w/wiper. It finally showed. Seems these brainy vehicles try like crazy to compensate when they sense problems, creating a nightmare to shoot down. No codes, we had changed crank sensor, cam sensor, coil, cap, wires, all sorts of expensive little sensors, to no avail, that fuel pump being intermittent was quite a find in the end, not one more bit of grief!!!

I used to have similar problem with dodge cause distributor shaft worn out of tolerance. kept shutting off when hot would not start for a while till cooled down a bit 20 min or so. no back fires from it though. stalling in reverse is also air filter clog sign.
