Default 2003 3500 transfer case seems to be toast

3500 4X4 deisel auto. this truck is bone stock, 69,000 mile. Coming home from a trip, running abot 70 and heard a thwack noise. Almost like I ran over something. Then kind of a loose metal flaping noise. A second load thwack. More grinding noise. Didn't run over anything. Next day put it on a lift. Nothing visable. started it put it gear, nothing. Put it in 4 wheel. Lots of noise. COming from the transfer case. Metel bouncing around bad sound. So hear are my questions. I am looking for advice.
1. Best manual and were to get it.
2. Best to get it rebuilt or buy new.
3. Is this a commen failure? 69,000 really. Truck is used as a truck, but not abused.
4. Is there any serius tips and gotchas for this job. I am not a professinal mech. But know my way around. Is there a good lacation for rmore info on this? I searched and didn't see any major threads.
5. I really like my truck but am very disapointed right now.

Wow that's kinda crazy my buddy has an 03 3500 with 260k miles on it and the truck occasionally does get abused. He landscapes and uses 4x4 almost everyday to back his trailer up his hill and his t case hasn't had any fluid at all for the last 15k miles
Maybe it was caused by something eighths front drive shaft, even though it wasn't in 4wd your front drive shaft still spins from the front axle
Sorry I don't have any experience with them hopefully someone here has some tips
