I'm only 17 and I used to be addicted to video games about 3 years ago. I stopped when I got out and realized how much fun real life is. Unfortunately that's when I started getting into trouble. My dad was actually a lot happier seeing me out chasing girls and getting drunk than sitting inside playing videogames until my eyes were bloodshot. Try getting him into something out of the norm. Something none of his friends do. Maybe riding dirtbikes, skateboarding, fishing, anything. Considering he is 10 and he cracked all those devices. I would not take electronics out of his life. Computers are the future and he will have some serious potential for a good job later in life.

Sounds like me a few years ago too haha my parents wouldnt let me on the computer or internet
I'm really suprised to hear he has such a high rank in Tang Soo Do and your having a hard time with discipline. My girlfriend, her dad and brother are all 3rd degree black belts almost masters and most of the kids I've met that have taken tang soo do are alot more responsible then even kids who take tae kwon do.

I have seriously been considering military school!

I've talked to my wife about counseling, and she to a friend who is a high school counselor. None of us think that he'll respond to counseling in a favorable manner. I think that we'll keep it in mind, but not do so at this point.

Thanks for the advice Dillion. We're trying, but it's quite frustrating. I've tried the dirtbikes (actually 4 wheelers and go carts) and he had only limited interest. I think he's too much of a wimp (as much as I hate to admit it), and only wanted to putt putt along on a dirt road that was pretty much just a parking lot. He claims it's too hot to go outside to do anything, regardless of the activity (unfortunately he's almost correct when it's well over 100 degrees).

I don't plan on completely taking electronic devices out of the equation, at least not after this situation has been brought under control. We'll come up with what we can all agree is a reasonable amount of time to use the electronics. I agree that as smart as he is, the sky is pretty much the limit for him. He claims he wants to design and build automobiles for a career choice (picture a combination of Chip Foose and the dudes who design for the major manufacturers)

He doesn't take tang soo do as seriously as I wish that he did. It's one of those things that you only get out of it what you put in to it. Many of the moves come pretty easily to him, so he's able to breeze through the patterns or kicks/ punches with little or no effort or practice. We often have to force him to practice his karate, as there is always room for improvement.

It sounds to me with you girlfriend and the rest of her family so close to being masters that you need to be careful not to piss 'em off LOL

On a different note he seems to have found a "new" interest. He is in beginner band this year (6th grade). He had his "band camp" today where he had what amounted to almost 1 on 1 instruction with his instrument (clarinet). He is now able to put it together and start to play it, sometimes he sounds like a sick goose, but I'm told that is normal and things will get better. He's pretty excited about band, so I'm hoping it'll keep his interest and redirect some of his energies.

*sigh*

That sounds too much like fun to me. I'm all about no fun at this point LOL.

I'd have LOVED to go to a sailing school when I was his age...

Bill...you aren't the only one. My 15 yo step son has been doing the same thing. although he isn't bright enough to "crack" our passwords...he just watches his mom type hers lol...he'd get up in the middle of the night and log into her WOW account (nerdy I know, but we started playing the first time I was in Korea back in '05 lol). I caught him one night when I got off of work early, he was sitting at her desk and as I walked in I asked him WTF was he doing up....he was "looking for a book".....not to mention I've caught him on my xbox when he was supposed to be watching his sister (she'll be 2 in Dec)....but we did the same as you....took away anything fun (his room was basically empty except his bed and desk. and don't get me started on the whole "chore" thing....told him we'd pay him 0.25 a chore (4 a day 5 on the weekends)...that's 30 bucks a month, BUT the only exception was he had to do them on his own, not us riding his ass about it....needless to say we haven't had to pay him for anything. We're at our wits end too....I'm hoping with me going to Korea again in a couple weeks (10 Sept RNLT) and moving her and the kids to Edwards (her dad lives like 30 mins away in Lancaster) that he'll pull his head out of is ass....I don't need to worry about it while I'm over there.

well there's my vent session....didn't mean to threadjack.

Good luck, and let me know how it works out.

Here is something to think about and it would be easier then removing all electronics. Take the power cords to everything that can be removed from the device and put them in a safe place. Take all batteries, controllers, remotes or anything that controls the device and do the same. Give him the extra chores that you are thinking of giving him and then allow him to add time for his "addiction" as in half hours or hour increments. This may get him to do chores...maybe get outside for physical activity....and give him something to work forward toward which he enjoys. Also a good idea is to give extra jobs that he isnt required to do like maybe sweeping/moping/dishes/vacuuming/mowing/ect that he can do daily or every other day to get extra time added.
