If you're talking about Magnums, the 318 Magnum has the better cam than the 360 Mag. If you're talking pre-Magnum LA, the 360 cam is slightly better than the 318. Sorry, but I'm totally confused as to what engine you're building.

I made it pretty clear their isn't much you can swap to make the 318 any better. It's mostly modification work, try a performance cam where you have a valve overlap make it sound nice but gives it more pep. Anyway's forget all that just do a timing advance. Oh btw the LA is the magnum engine. L meaning light because it's 60 Lbs lighter then the original A engines. In a nutshell Magnum = LA = 60 Lbs lighter then the A

The '92 up Magnum is an outgrowth of the LA that was developed in the '60's, but for purposes of identification and differentiation, they are different in as much as the heads and intake are concerned, also including the way the valvetrain is lubricated. Do you feel you've accomplished anything by trying to split hairs here?

Oh, and increasing cam overlap to give a "good sound" will not work well with the stock computer.

I wasn't looking to tell the man to make it sound nice, I'm not one of those all show no go, the fact and the matter is with certain performance cams that will have advances and benefits in timing their is going to be a different idle then stock and different run along with sound as I'm sure you know that. I didn't go into detail about the computer for one main reason and thats cause at this point we are all just talking about what can and can't be done, options pretty much. It would be pointless to make a book out of a suggestion but I do understand your point and it's a good one. Anyways I didn't have any intentions or anything to cause aspersions and cause rukas, I'm just trying to help the man every bit as you are. In all honesty I think it's pointless to do what he wants to do because the vehicle as it is has enough HP and torque, changing cams and heads will do nothing for him. The 360 and 318 head are the same their was just two different castings I don't remember the casting numbers off the top of my head but besides the point. Anyways regardless of A and LA engines from the past.

LA small blocks are pre magnum. If there isn't any difference between 5.2 and 5.9 then why not advise them on dropping a 5.9 crank and pistons in their 5.2s so they have 5.9s?

Perhaps it is sufficient to say they are of the same design, but differ in specifications.

ramvan2500, I know what you mean. Not speaking of anyone in particular, but it gets aggravating when you try to help and they keep coming back with, "Well what if..." I'm reminded of a fellow that finally had enough of my questions about a sailboat rig. I was emailing him with all my what-if questions. He had the same type boat. Finally, he wrote that he didn't see why I didn't just go out and sail the thing before trying to redesign it. (Followed by several exclamation points). I thought I was doing good by covering several viewpoints before setting up a replacement mast and rigging. Anyway, he was right, but despite his chiding, it still took me a while to accept it.
