I work in a shop, it's why it pays to have a good tech. If you have a tech that can do it in 2 hours and book time is 2.5.... you have more time to do other jobs and are basically double charging for the tech's time. It's how every job is billed at almost every job.

At the same time if you have a new tech that it takes 3 hours... i doubt you'd be willing to pay an extra .5 because the tech was an idiot or not experienced.

I would say you came out alright. The dealerships here in town are crazy. One wanted to charge me $18 a piece for plugs. When I got warranty work done at another dealership they offered to change the plugs and "decarbonize" for a mere $600.

I changed my own plugs last week. I wouldn't say it was an easy job, but definitely not worth the $300.00 I was quoted. It would have been easier if I had all the necessary tools, but I managed to muddle through. Maybe it's my imagination, but the truck seems to run much smoother, with better throttle response. I was over by 15,000 miles, also, as the manual calls for changing the plugs at 30,000 miles.

This tread reminds me of this story:
Mechanic vs Doctor
A mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Dodge SRT-4 when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop.

The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage "Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?"

The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the SRT. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked,

"So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new.

So how can I make 39,675 a year, a pretty small salary, and you get the really big bucks, $1,695,759, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"

The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered to the mechanic...

''Try doing it with the engine running."
