Default Kegger belly pan is it really needed?

Ok so I have been reading on here for a couple days now how the belly pan starts leakng and you have to remove the kegger to fix it. Ok so what purpose does it serve being there? Why not just make an aluminum copy of the steel cover and have it TIG welded in place? Weld it all the way around and viola no more gasket problems. Just wondering.

They do make aluminum ones. Some people weld them shut, but, really, if you get one of the thicker (1/2") aluminum ones and bolt it back on, you'll never have an issue again.

Its nice to be able to take the plate off in the event you want to modify the inside of the intake or really give it a good cleaning.

But, Hughes Engines has the plate as does a guy on some of the dakota, Jeep forums. Or, if you have the time, patience, and ability...go buy a felpro gasket and cut out your own piece of half inch aluminum.

I was gonna do the mod then have her welded shut for now then get the Hughes intake when I get the cash. But before I do all of that I should probably buy the truck huh?

If you weld it shut...don't accidentally drop something in there...lol Bad enough with the pan on the bottom.

If it was welded it would be just like a traditional intake then. Plus I am still learning here, but aren't the runners N shaped? Air goes in the bottom of the runner and they curve up and over to the other side where it enters the head? Which is totally different then a single or dual plane where air goes in to runner down into the head. So if something gets dropped into the kegger theoretically unless it is really light it would just sit in the bottom of the plenum and not get sucked up and over to the heads?

The belly pan gasket and the plate it seals are the product of bean counters and production simplicity. It's easier to make that way, thus, cheaper and faster. The only purpose it serves is to make money for the service department. Welding is a perfectly viable solution. Replacement with the FI Air Gap is the other.
