I can understand performance, my MDS has cost me a few freeway pulls cuz it didnt deactivate fast enough, but better fuel milage? Im throwing the BS flag on that one. Whenever my MDS kicks on i get over 23ish MPG and so far im averaging 17.7-18.3 (hand calculated) averaged every week.

I will keep my MDS until one of my mods makes me delete it, weather its a cam or blower

Well hey I've never used mds so I don't know but I just know what people post. Some people say they get better mpg without it. I'd assume this is city and not hwy driving.

I believe some members are confused about a couple things

the Transmission has Nothing to do with the MDS, but it does ALLOW MDS to work
MDS is a ENGINE function of the 1500 models with the 5.7 Hemi
the 5.7 engines in the 2500 & 3500 series do not have ANY MDS
MDS is a function of the engine, MDS is a 4 cylinder engine function, so your are only using 1/2 the engine
------------------------------------------------

the 545RFE & the 65RFE transmissions has gears, the 65rfe uses one of the 2nd gears differently
First gear
Second low gear
Second high gear
third gear
fourth gear
FIFTH gear
Fifth gear with Torque Converter Lockup
--------------------------------------------------
( a brief explanation of TCL also known as TCC, written by a transmission technician,
I wanted to briefly mention what the term lock-up means. Lock up is a feature introduced in about 1982 with the advent of the T-700R4 and T-200-C General motors transmissions. Simply put, since a torque converter is a fluid coupler it will always have a certain amount of ‘slip’ built into it. It is unavoidable due to fluid being the main component of the coupling action. This decreases gas mileage by 1-4 miles per gallon, the built in slippage, that is.

To eliminate the problem, an actual clutch disc has been built right into the torque converter. At a certain speed, usually about 45-50 mph a message from a computer sends a forceful ‘charge‘ of automatic transmission fluid to the converter, which applies the clutch plate inside and eliminates the small amount of built in ‘slippage’.

Darn good idea. A lot of updates and improvements have been developed over the years which has just about perfected the design)

------------------------------------------------------------
When you are in 5th gear with the torque converter locked, basically OVER DRIVE,
a signal is sent to the electronic controller that allows the MDS on the engine to function, but only IF certain conditions are present, like driving on flatter surfaces at a steady rate of speed, MDS kicks out if you climb a hill because your Engine has to work harder, it needs ALL 8 cylinders. The transmission still stays in 5th with the converter locked up, unless it has to shift down & then the converter becomes unlocked & it goes into a more proper gear

I hope that this clears things up just a little bit, i didn't understand it for a long time

Agreed, I do not see how staying out of MDS will increase MPG. I certainly see an an increase in MPG with MDS.

I get 1-2 MPG better disabling ECO during city driving than I do with it enabled. On the highway ECO has been better.

It can be disabled with a tuner (not available for 2011)....or you can bump it down into manual shift mode where the EVIC will show "5" on the display, and this disables MDS I believe.

Perfect!!! Thanks for the help!!!

I know at around 47-52mph(the majority of my drive home from work), the MDS will kick on and off. With the Magnaflows, it drives me crazy!!! I wanna turn if off for that reason!!

I make a 250mi highway drive every weekend, and am getting 20.9mpg on those trips. I love seeing the "ECO" light on for those trips. It just gets old on around town driving.

I appreciate your help
