So if you put it to "5" it will shift normally, the only difference is that MDS will be disabled.

EDIT: and no this does not harm anything...
Thanks for your reply. Nope. I understood correct. It's a no-brainer that putting the transmission into 5 doesn't keep it in that gear at all speeds.

I should have rephrased my statement to something like "So it is okay to have the shifter in 5th to disable the ECO feature?"

I drove around with the shifter in 5th... I did not notice a difference in gas economy (and I was driving like a grandpa!) I'll continue to drive for the rest of the week in 5 to see if my mileage improves.

There's likely one advantage of running in 5 and that is the responsiveness of the vehicle, aggressively depressing the gas pedal provides much better pick-up.

If most of your city driving is a speeds below 60kph, you might even try shifting down to '4' on the EVIC. I noticed this improved my city mileage, and further improved the overall responsiveness of the truck, as it never sees an OD gear.

BTW - The numbers on the EVIC don't follow the gear numbers exactly.
1 = 1st
2 = 2nd
3 = 2nd Prime
4 = 3rd (Direct)
5 = 4th (1st OD gear)

When in 'Drive', you also get 5th gear (2nd OD gear), but you have to contend with the MDS as well.

Also, for piece of mind, you can (within reason) run in any manually selected gear, or in tow/haul mode without worry of hurting anything. For the sake of experimentation and to see what it's like, I would run for a while using the tow/haul mode. You will notice that it shifts a little differently, and decelerates harder, and is more responsive. Some find these characteristics annoying when there is no trailer in tow, some find them desirable.

Brad:

Thanks for your help.
I'll experiment running in 4th gear (oops... 4 on EVIC).

Very true. I am getting almost 21 mpg @ 75- 80 mph while in 5th (no eco) and 19.6 mph at the same speeds in "D" eco mode. I don't understand it, but oh well. Love the truck

So... I drove home from work this afternoon in 5th (no eco) and noticed my gas mileage improve quite substantially! Instead of getting between 15.6 and 16.5 litres per 100Km, I shot down to 12.1 litres per 100Km (or around 20 mpg)!
I even shifted down to 4 but didn't feel comfortable in that gear. Though I never noticed an RPM drop between 5 and 4.
As for getting 12 litres per 100Km, I used to get that when my truck was new, and I was doing highway driving (but not in 5 on EVIC).

I'm a believer!

Cool! I think dodge should have made MDS only enabled above a certain speed....like say 55mph or so.

I must jsut get lucky. My road home is 65-70 freeway and 55 street and i set the cruise and just go and get great MPG (between 18-23 on EVIC). I bump it down to 5th and it shoots down to like 16 or so.

Stupid truck lol

From what I've read the ECO mode does not really have anything to do with MDS.

Seems like a lot of people think that because "ECO" is displayed then the trucks MDS is active, or whatever.

From what I understand it's just there to show you that you're "driving in a fuel economically correct way". You'll notice if it's in ECO mode and you give it just a little bit too much gas, it will drop it, let off a little and it will show again.

Basically as long as you aren't accelerating too fast it will show ECO. Or if your foot is off the gas altogether.

I could be wrong, but that's what I gathered from reading the manual and looking around online
