Default MDS delete, could it be done?

I am curious, could the MDS actually be removed from the 1500s ??

The 1500 HEMI models have the MDS, the 2500 & heavier models use the identical engine & don't have the MDS.

Could someone just remove the MDS unit & bolt the stuff from a 2500 right in its place?
I don't believe it is a SMOG device, so no gov't agency could say it is illegal.
I don't believe it would light up any warning lights
I don't see how it could even Void your warranty, or they would have to void all the heavier Rams warranties

What are your thoughts ???

Hmm.... very interesting. I never thought about it like that. Sounds like it could be done.

It's possible but you also need a 2500 PCM or find someone who can remove the MDS function from your PCM.

Isn't the MDS function one of the things a Tuner shuts off ??
if you could just remove it, it couldn't engage, almost the same as what a tuner would do
????

The transmission would not hold up long doing that
Say i was in El Paso Texas, 724 miles to San Diego, i usually do it in about 10 hours
The transmission would likely grenade about 1/2 way using tow/haul

A programmer can diable the MDS in the PCM, and if you want to get rid of the mechanical features of the MDS, you need to replace the MDS lifters and Inertia sells a MDS lifter delete kit for $175. The MDS is not part of emissions, only for the fuel economy, but the warranty of the engine would be toast since it takes the stock engine out of its designed parameters; the 2500s are designed without MDS, so that's why they can get away without it.

But every 5.7 HEMI has the exact same bolt holes & everything else is identical, it is just the 1500s have the MDS added to it

That is why i can't see why it can't be done

I read up a bit more on it, you would need to replace the heads with heads from the 2500 or heavier duty series
so you could only use the short block from the 1500s

Here i thought it would be a simple add on removal

You could disconnect the wiring to the MDS solenoids (C140). It's a 6 pin connector with 5 wires at the back of the engine on the drivers side.

However, I'm sure the PCM monitors it, and will get all pissy if it's disconnected and throw codes for multiply failures. I guess you could measure the resistance of the solenoids and all the 4 resistors to the connector to trick the PCM.

Don't forget the Challenger also has the available HEMI, the one coupled to the automatic tranny has MDS and is rated somewhere around 350HP, the one coupled to the manual tranny does NOT have MDS and is rated somewhere around 375HP... the HEMI in the Rams is rated at 390HP

where does the difference in horsepower come in? Is it all in the exhaust/ intake?

just thought I'd add my twenty cents worth
