Default from 20's to 17's for winter

Hey all: Quick question? Will pulling off my 20's for the winter and bought a set of 17's off Cl from a 2011. Will running the 17's without the TPMS have an adverse affect or just light up the warning lamp on my 2011? Please no flames. Thanks in advance. John

It will just light up your dash indicator. Make sure the 17s fit clearance wise and dont stick out to far before you mount wheels on them if they arent off of a ram originally

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to pull off the 20s? They are crome clad wheels and not real...I'm pretty sure you'll be good to go for the winter. I had crome clad on my Expedition for many winters and it didn't change them at all.

17" tires are cheaper than 20" .. plus the chrome cladding takes a beating with any extra gravel they put on the roads.. at least they do up where i live. You can pick up a set of 17's relatively cheap, then all you have to do is swap a full set of wheels and tires over from season to season.. instead of dismounting and remounting tires every winter/fall... but....

Everytime you get in the vehicle it'll tell you that you have no air in your tires, other than that you're fine.

What size tires is everyone running on their winter 17's to replace factory 20's?

Yeah it is common to do this....we used to swap wheels/tires in winters in PA as it was easier/cheaper than mounting a set of tires every season...

In New England, people that could afford it, had a set of winter tires & rims & a set for summer
My grand parents had a winter car, a beater
& the good car for summer

I wore out my tires every season, so i just bought new rubber
We belonged to a Farmers Co-op & got them fairly cheap

265/70/17's
are the stock Ram size and there are lots of winter tires to choose from in that size that are cheaper than 20's

After researching tire sizes it seems the 265 70 17 is about a inch shorter than the 20's. Is this going to look bad and change the speedometer drastically. A 285 70 17 is the same outside diameter as the 20's, wouldn't it be better to go with this size?

Your dealer can change you speedo for you (they can access a drop down list that allows them to pick a wide range of tire sizes for the truck).

Personally I like to run a narrower tire in the winter, not a wider one. A wider one will give you more floatation and less pounds per square inch of tire contact area on the road. Since a truck has a light rear end already, I want to give it as much bite as possible.

You'll also have more selection in the 265 size but if you find one you like in 285, then that's not an issue.
