Default Tow/Haul ?

I have never towed anything and just got a travel trailer.
My question is about the Tow/Haul button. I understand it's good to use it on hills but how does it work? I pressed it to see what happens (with no trailer attached) and it displays tow/haul on dash and the number 5 in green which I will assume it's displaying 5th speed? What am I supposed to do then? I tried changing the gears on the +/- buttons on the transmission arm but nothing happens. The same number remains. Am I supposed to change the shifting gear manually to +/- next to drive or is it automatic?

Usually tow/haul just means it won't go into overdrive. I have only had my truck for about three weeks, so I am still learning the Dodge stuff.

Found this on a 2011 RAM review site,

A Tow/Haul mode is standard and is useful when towing. Activating Tow/Haul may take the truck out of top gear but it does not lock it out; you can still cruise in overdrive with tow/haul on. The Tow/Haul mode keeps the transmission cooler when towing by holding gears longer (and reducing hunting between gears) and shifting faster (and harder).

From my understaning it will also prevent MDS from activating ......
