You were very close snrusnak. His speedo is actually off by 10.84% and reading too slow, of course.
lol yeah I was rounding everything...

If you get a programmer I'd have the dealer set it back to stock before you make adjustments, not sure that it matters though...

Default Tried both

I bought my truck used also, but I test drove both the 4.7 and the 5.7. I actually was not that much impressed with the 5.7. For the price difference in the used market, I decided to go with the 4.7. I have not heard of anyone with a hemi getting 24 mpg personally, but with the Volante Cold Air Intake and the Flowmaster exhaust I put on my 4.7, I consistantly got 20 mpg with the cruise set at 75 going between Starkville MS and Ft. Rucker AL.

I'm actually glad I didn't get the Hemi, although the last (and only) one I drove was in 1971. I haven't timed it, but I'm convinced that my 4.7 regular cab 4x4 is faster 0-60 than my last three fast cars...a 97 Lincoln Mark VIII (stock), an 02 Mustang GT with an x-pipe and cat-back, and an 06 Monte Carlo SS (stock). That's fast enough for me.

I've been through 3 1/4 tanks of gas so far, and with 30% city and 70% highway driving, I'm averaging a little over 19-mpg. Had I bought a Hemi, I can assure you with that temptation I'd be averaging about 10.

Another reason is that after I do my first oil change with Mobil 1, I'm not going to have any reservations about going the full 8K-miles between changes. Had I opted for the Hemi, I don't think I'd want to stretch it that far.

The final reason I opted for the 4.7 is that I just don't like the idea of MDS. I know it works, I know it's proven technology, and I know it's seamless and all the rest of it...but I just don't like the concept. I didn't like it in my Monte Carlo (which never averaged more than 22-mpg), and I know I wouldn't like it on any other vehicle.

I didn't buy my Ram for the mpg, but I do use it for a fairly-lengthy commute. Once I get a few miles on it (and switch to synthetic), I fully expect to average 20-22 mpg...which is a whole lot better than I'd get with 390-hp on tap.

Realistically, the new hemi with mds gets the same highway mpg as the 4.7L (give or take)...the 4.7L probably should get a few points better in the city though. There's a lot of factors though... I just averaged my worst tank this weekend since I've had the truck (nearly a year). I got right about 16mpg average. Half tank of normal to and from work city driving, and half tank of city driving/idling as I was helping someone move this weekend and left the truck running for the wife sitting in the cab (it was raining all weekend while we were moving). I usually average about 18mpg. 17-18 city, 20-23 hwy depending on speed. Probably 95% of my driving is city driving.

The only thing I don't agree with in your statement is the oil change duration, if you're willing to go 8k miles on the 4.7L, why not the 5.7L?

I was a gearhead back in the late-60's and early 70's, when Hemi's were something really, really special...and quite rare. While there's many more on the road today, they're still something "special" in my old mind, and if I had one I know I'd fuss over it like a mother hen. Rational? Probably not, but I know I would. Also, I've read that the Hemi must use 5-20 oil; otherwise, the MDS won't work correctly. Now if the MDS is that finicky about oil, I don't think I'd be comfortable going 8K between changes...even with synthetic. Based on what I've read, I don't think many Hemi guys are going more than 5K.

I see. I also am happy my engine doesn't have MDS, but at the same time I'd much rather have a pushrod motor than a OHC motor, but really they are all things that make little to no difference. Both the 4.7L and 5.7L are great engines, one just has more displacement/power output.
