Default Stupid Vet Benefits almost killed a guy today

Today I had to transport a co-worker to the hospital after he tried to commit suicide in his room by taking a whole lot of sleeping pills, but he fortunately took pills with hallucinogenic properties so he ended up 'sleep walking' out of his room and into a common area where security found him. Luckily, our paramedic was able to reverse the OD and we got him to the hospital for observation. The worker was a staff sergeant who's been out of the service for 2 years, after serving in Afghanistan, Somalia, and a few other NATO postings.

Apparently the canadian military's veteran benefits still pay out for suicides to a sum of $500,000, which is absolutely retarded! First, you take a group of people who have known issues with depression and social disfunctions and give them an incentive to off themselves for the 'benefit' of their family? The guy was 42, had a 17yr old son (1yr left on alimony), building a house with his new gf, a full time job paying over $100K/yr, and he thinks it's the best idea to kill himself so his gf and son get $500,000? There was rumor of him possibly being let go, but with his training he can walk down the road to the next plant and get a job becuase they are in such shortage of experienced trades people up here it isn't funny.

Does anyone else see a problem with this scenario?

I can see the other side of the coin where a guy comes back so messed up he kills himself, so why should his family be left to foot all the bills, but in this scenario it's just too messed up for me to understand as it was an incentive for him to kill himself.

Thoughts?

Sadly, no matter how much we train and try to get people to recognize warning signs, if someone wants to kill themselves, they will succeed at some point. I've rarely met a person that only tried once. The folks I've known that have tried once succeeded the second time.

Glad you were able to get him to the hospital. Hopefully he recognizes things are better on this side of the grass.

Agree. I don't really agree with what they train us about suicide. If he/she wants to do it, they will find a way. My ex-brother-in-law showed signs so I told the parents and they took him to the doctor and he was placed on anti-depression meds. I talked to him and listened whenever I visited.

He ended up shooting himself in the temple with a .44.

Your military's benefits are similar to ours. Our goverment decided that just because the servicemember is suicidal, does not mean the family should be punished. It's not my wife's fault if I decide to put an M4 in my mouth and pull the trigger. (not that I would, but thats not the point). Your family gets paid if you are on active duty, unless you died in a car crash because you were impaired, or if you died because you were doing something blatantly retarded. Most suicide attemps are a cry for help...therefore the DOD (Dept. of Defense), decided that it would be better to pay the families for the ones who actually succeeded (intentionally or not) at taking their own lives.
