Default Needing some help

ok, so i need some long time ram owners or techs to give me some advice here. I have a 23 mile all highway drive home from work every day. i was getting on the interstate today and i floored it so i could merge into traffic. Once i got up to speed, my "check gauges" light came on and my temp gauge was pegged on hot. The truck was running fine, my air was blowing cold and everything. So i pulled off on the shoulder, shut the truck off and turned it right back on. The gauge reset to center and stayed like that the rest of the 22 miles home. i got on it a couple times to see if it would do it again and it was perfect the entire way. I got home, popped the hood and it was normal. so, is it a fluke or gauge problem or am i in store for a serious issue? any help is greatly appreciated. btw, my truck is an 05 with 75k miles on it. Thanks again

Bump

Interesting, most likely nothing to worry about, I'd just keep an eye on it though.

How is your coolant level?

Do you think your belt might be slipping and it didn't drive your water pump for a while as you were accelerating?

There might be some air in your cooling system too.

its possible that your thermostat stuck closed for that hard acceleration, or a blockage that could get worse with time (possible), i would check all obvouis hoses ,clamps and fluid level, if all checks out try a pressure test, autozone rents these kits, if all this checks out but the problem still persists i would replace the t-stat, and if it still persist a full coolant flush should be done, im trying to give you a step process elimination, not to be confused with doing it all at once, hope this helps, also check the voltage at the sensor while it warms up if your inlcined enough to do so, this can be done at anytime while troubleshooting.

Coolant levels are good. hoses and clamps are too. It literally went from center to pegged in the blink of an eye. it wasnt gradual at all. and within 15 seconds of me noticing it pegged, i had the truck shut off and restarted and it went straight to center. The clog theory doesnt seem likely because of the short amount of time that lapsed but the tstat sticking makes sense. Ill check voltage tomorrow morning while warming up.

Thanks for the insight everyone. Ill keep and eye on it and keep everyone posted. I may replace the tstat anyway. Last thing i need are warped heads or a blown gasket. Thanks again
