Default Gears and tuner for manual trans.

I know the gear topic has been done to death but i have yet to find a post with my specific truck. So hear goes.

I have a 2004, 1500, 4.7, 4X4, MANUALTRANSMISSION. I have the 3.55 gears and my tires are the stock 265's and don't plan on changing the tire size.

My question is- Would changing to the 4.56 gears with the stock tire size be to much? Or should I go with the 4.10's. I am changing mostly for the sake of towing. I don't race it and I am not a speed demon. I am mostly on a 55 MPH HWY. Towing about #6000. I noticed that most of the guys on here with 4.56's are running larger tires. Would my MPG suffer that much with the manual trans?

Also. Would a tuner do much for me having the manual? I thought they mostly just changed shift points in the automatic trans.

Thanks in advance for any answers guys.

Can you give your full tire size? Also do you know the specific name of the manual gearbox you have? That way I can look up the gear ratios and help you out...

A tuner would still probably give you about 15hp and 15 lb ft or so, but you won't get any other benefit as far as the trans goes. You would be able to adjust for rear axle gear ratio changes though, so that'd be a plus. There is also a tow tune that could help you out a little...

Is it a 5 speed manual? If so I think it's a NV3500...and if it is it looks like the final overdrive ratio is 0.73:1. If you're cruising at 55 mph and have 4.56 you should be fine. Post your tire size and I'll look into it a little more. And if you can figure out for sure what gearbox you have that'd help.

It is the 5 speed nv3500. And I am running 245/70/17's. Not the 265's like i previously stated. Thanks guys.

Ok your tires are about 30.5" diameter. Right now:
70mph = ~1998rpm
55mph = ~1570rpm

With 4.10:
70mph = ~2308rpm
55mph = ~1813rpm

With 4.56:
70mph = ~2567rpm
55mph = ~2017rpm

4.56 might be a little steep if you plan on cruising at 70mph+

Also, are you sure your truck can tow 6,000 lb? I'd double check, I think that manual transmissions can't tow as much as auto's, and my 2nd gen 4.7L with 3.55 can only tow like 6,250lb.

i have a 4.7 with 4.56s posi and i run 2.4 k at 70 and the truck pulls its ass off comparied to when i had the 3.55 opens you know how when you go up good size hills and have to down shift or the truck will start to slow mine no longer does that! i can start from 3rd gear if i want on a flat road lol when i put my 17s on now its like holy sh*t this thing gets moving im turning 305 35 24s with no problem if your towing a lot imo i would go with 4.56/4.10 posi, h.o. cams and a tuner and you wont have many problems that is an all tq set up
