Default Gasoline octane story

I heard this the other day at a truck stop from a fuel tanker driver. He said his truck carries 87 octane with 10% ethanol and 93 octane with no ethanol. That is what he delivers to a gas station. When you select the 87 or 93 octane, you get what he delivered. If you select 89 or 91 octane, the pump computer mixes the 87 and 93 to get the 89 or 91 that you selected. Is this true? I always thought that I was getting the 89 straight from a tank of 89.......... just curious!

My brother manages a gas station. He confirmed this, they have two tanks one with premium and one with regular grade gas. There is some system that mixes it.

I asked him about it because at his station you can get 87, 88, 89, 92, and 93 octane.

Yes, thats true of the newer computerized pumps.

When 89 octane unleaded first made the seen it was to cover a "vacancy". Most gas stations had three tanks.

Regular (Leaded)
Unleaded
Premium

Plus or Midgrade took the place of Regular Leaded when it left the market. When everyone was having to upgrade their tanks a few years ago because of EPA regs most upgraded pumps as well and went to a two tank system.

Makes sense, just wish we could get 93 up here, our 91 winter gas is bad enough.
