Also some cheap intakes come with cheap filters that arent very porous and allow a lot more dirt to get into your engine which we all know isnt good...

Ya I use K&N filters in my bike and jeep, so I was figuring on ordering one of theirs.

There are really several differences:

1) Aluminum tube vs plastic tube, aluminum conducts heat better so it's not quite as good, although this has very little effect on a moving airstream inside the tube

2) Cheap filter, but you could resolve this issue by buying another filter. In my experience, even the cheapo filters are decent, better than stock.

3) This is the big one, no heat shield. Installing a cheapo or home made intake that draws hot air from the engine bay WILL decrease power and mpg over the stock CLOSED intake setup.

Keep these things in mind and you can buy and modify a cheapo intake and make it a good one.

Big thing is quality. I just picked up a Volant for the 4.7 from lmperformance for 255$ shipped. Seems to be the best on the market. If you go with a cheaper one, I would highly suggest upgrading the filter.

Good thread. Ive had some questions myself. There are a few that have a tube that runs down low behind the pass highlight, like mentioned in this thread, but living in WI with snow/slush and stuff, wouldnt you then run the risk of picking up moisture? Sounds like the heat shield is perhaps the difference maker.

Sean is right, plastic vs the "lightweight aircraft aluminum" and i have a homemade one, sucks great lmao noticed gains in mpg. either way both are going to such hot air and ICY is right, only so much is going in and difference in air temp barely differ, but idk if the difference would matter.
