Default Starting a 5.9 diesel

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 3500, 24V 5.9L turbo, I bought new. A week ago sounded like the starter was getting ready to go. Hence the "grinding" sound made by a starter. I replaced today with a brand new starter not a reman. Its still making that same grinding sound ( abt 5-10 sec ) before actually starting. The batteries are abt 2 years old. Could it be a bad new starter, battery or something else??? It has 171,000+ miles on it. Appreciate any ideas here. Thanx

Well the fact that it is actually starting is a good thing ...... Yes you could have got a bad starter....It actually sounds to me (Reads to me) like a bad connection. If the truck is turning over for 6 to 8 seconds before starting you are not getting enough fuel a low rpms to start that beast. You need to check the fuel pressure after the Fuel Injection Pump. Batteries could also be a figure expecially if you are waiting for the wait to start light to go out. If they are close to dead and your alternator is the only thing keeping them alive you will not have the cranking amps needed to spin it over fast enough. I cannot hear what is going on so from my point of view that is what I got. The High Pressure Fuel pumps on the 2nd Gen 24 valves are bad to go out. ANd most go out slow like that and cause the same issue as you are having........Weak batt's and a weak pump can equal your issue........Could also be the crank positioning sensor........I think there is a flash for that

Forgot to mention the fuel injection pump, dealer replaced back in March this year...... Could also be the crank positioning sensor........I think there is a flash for that.......
