Default valve seals

i agree 100% that it seems like valve seals, but 100 here & 100 there is getting costly, both dealers i took the truck was to do the leak down but neither one has done so,!! some where in this thread i offerd to pay someone in the area to check it out who knows more about this then i do, it does not seem that there is anyone near enough too the tampa fl. area, i would hate to pay tuffy auto care $725.00 to change the valve seals to find out it was the oil rings, tomorrow i will shop around a little more, maybe pick a few more brains, i will see what i can figure out,

Smoking when taking off from a stop in indicative of valve seals, though it could be rings. A leakdown test will tell you more that a compression test. In any case, there is no reason to think that you need to go find a new engine right away- unless your engine is making death noises.....

Go take some aspirin, give it some thought, and enjoy the truck.

1 quart in 3000mi is not excessive. Actually, that's pretty good for a high mileage engine. Since it doesn't smoke under normal driving, I wouldn't be in a hurry. I figure yo have about 20,000 miles to find the right help.

Burning a qt in several thousand miles IMO doesn't need a repair. Sure it's not good or normal, but it's also not worth the money to fix. I'd run the truck on a thicker oil and when the engine goes several years down the road get a lower mileage replacement from a scrap yard. My s10 started burning a qt every 5,000 miles shortly after 100,000 miles, it's still running strong with over 220,000 miles, and still burns just 1 qt every 5,000 miles. Switching from 10w30 to 10w40 high mileage oil helped a lot with oil consumption.

One quart in 3000?!?!?!

What are you even THINKING about having expensive repairs done for? Leave it alone until you need to fix it. Just my opinion.

Default burning oil or not

the problem is not going thru oil or not, it is that something is going out, it is
actually getting worse by the day, it really seems to be the valve seals because what i have just noticed is that i can shut off the motor for a couple of min. & it will not puff any smoke for the first couple of miles, it is almost like the oil needs to work its way back up too the top of the heads & seals before it starts that dam puffing,!! as far as the oil consumption i will need to check it after 3000 miles, when i was only going through one quart it was not puffing smoke at each stop,!! if anyone has any suggestions at all, please give me a call before i do jump off that cliff & buy a new motor,?? (813-293-0496),
thanks

I sent you a text to the phone number listed. I have a buddy here in St Pete who is a mobile mechanic(and fellow Ram owner) who may be able to give you some insight. Sounds like a good reason to grab a couple beers and save you a couple thousand bucks.... I take tips for good info by the way!!! lol You can reach me at 727-656-8484 tomorrow if you'd like to discuss having him take a look at it.

Can you simply swap a 2nd gen 4.7L in to a 1st gen 4.7L truck? I'm sure it bolts in but is all the wiring the same? I'd double check the wiring part/ecm/etc...

I guess that's not too bad but really that seems expensive for your discount, although I assume it's a new or refurbished engine. I can get a low mileage engine from a scrap yard for under a grand and install it in a weekend(many mechanics would charge liek $500 to $1000 for install I'd guess).

Whatever you do good luck, it just seems unnecessary to me. Why not wait and see how long the engine lasts, it may be much longer than you think, and then you spend the same money anyway...so no loss.

Default scrap yard

believe it or not, here in south florida they are asking $2200. to $2500. i checked on that today, if you go that route you really don't know what you are getting into with used & only a 30-day warranty, also going from shop to shop $2875.00 fo a rebuilt with all the updates is a steal,, the discount at the dealer where my son works is labor only, don't think you can really find a shop to do an engine swap for $375.00 out the door,!! thats all the fluids & taxas, and a dealer at that, may it be a toyota or dodge, thats like i said at only $25.00 per hr. he printed out the break-down sheet of book time,

and on the 1st & 2nd gen motor swap, i believe its all in the wiring as you said, when called and was asking the rep questions about the rebuilt he told me the only thing he needed to know was how many plugs are into the computer, 3 or 4, also if it has an EGR valve at the rear of the motor,
