I have a 97 Ram 1500 5.9 & it was pinging bad. Was told by a very experienced mechanic to watch for above normal oil consumption and look in intake for oil on bottom of plenum cover. Found oil on cover and the truck started to use 2+ qts of oil between changes. Reviewed a few youtube vids on the plenum cover issue which is very very common. The gasket will let go, oil is pulled in from lifter valley. I suspect the pinging is the result of excessive carbon in combustion chamber from the burning of oil. I bought a new cover/seal kit from Hughes and just put it on. Very stout nice piece, far superior to original. My truck had 98,000 mile so I replaced the original timing set, tension & idler pulley, water pump, hoses & belt, plug wires, therm. at the same time. I was also told to look for excessive corrosion on the aluminum timing cover where it mates to the water pump, mine wast too bad. I would recommend using original MOPAR parts if possible or at least made in the USA. You don't want to have to tear into it again because cheap part were used. Not exactly a afternoon job but doable for the average wrench. Hope things work out.
