Its a 2WD. I want to get as close to level as possible without losing too much weight hauling ability.

Rough country sells a 3" "lift kit" it's your best bang for your buck IMO.
$300 you get new front coils and a 1" rear block. Whether you use the rear block or not I up to you. If your happy with just the 3" in the front you could always sell off the rear block

Mornin guys, I just bought my first ram, I want to level the front and run a taller tire. Are there any downsides to a leveling kit?

Is your new truck 2wd or 4x4?
If its 2wd, some guy have ballpoint problems because of the angle they are left at
4x4 runs the risk of axle vibrations due the the angles they are left on and pre-mature ball joint and front end wear is also possible.
It's not often that people have serious problems with leveling kits but it does happen
