Default Another Whistle

Hi all. Disregard my signature line on this one I have 2 rams this is the other, a: 98 1/2 ton 2wd 5.2 automatic.

I thought I had what sounded like a vaccume leak accept for another charicteristic of the failure that was occuring, and Ill get right to that point.

After the truck really warms up all the constant whistling that is orrcuring when it is cold goes away but something else begins to happen.

It has no coorilation to the throttle or the brake.

If warm and at highway speed aproximetly every 30 sec you will hear coming from under the hood a distinct hiss for about 3 or 5 seconds or so and then it stops.

I replaced the throttle body gasket, the one I pulled out was still in tact and my problem percists.

Here is why I replaced that.

When its cold its loud and constant but unfortunatly very difficult to change the tone of the hiss regardless of where I look. It gives me 3 or 4 minuites of hiss untill it gradually tapers off and eventually goes into that intermittent mode I spoke of first. Ive scowered over it a few times now changed the throddle body gasket and come up with nothing.

It seems like its eminating around the base of the throttle body and there are a couple or few sensors there could any of these be making this intermittin hiss while underway and it occours at any speed and continuues every so often for a few seconds.

The symptom it gives me while underway after warming up, to my semi professional ear on this vehicle, has be believing it may be a sensor opening and closing. It also seems like the noise is right at the base of the throttle body. The brake power assist is not leaking the stuff going to the dash controls are not leaking none of the intake plugs all the obvious I think I have eliminated as reason but I could be wrong.

Sorry for the long windedness. Thanks in advance.

What is it?

I'd guess the IAC on the back of the throttle-body, or the "o" ring that seals it.

Does the truck idle low like it wants to stall occasionally and then the hiss gets worse, and then it stops and the idle jumps back up?

Not that i am aware of. It also when its cold turns over to start noticably longer than it used to. Preformance and fuel mialage at this point I would define as unnoticable. Its my wifes truck she described one perticular recent cold start as a "lurching fealing" whatever that was.

What is that sensor you suggested unabrieviated LOL

Thanks again

Well I have the other post of whistleing ram. It sounds much like your problem but mine was constant over 1,500 rpm. The truck sounds like it has a turbo! Thats anoying when it dosnt. So after doing much of the same trouble shooting. I took the belt off of crank pully. Quiet as a church mouse so I found the bearing in alt might be going out plus belt is worn. Try those steps to see what happen's let us know. Every problem solved is one less for all.

Its not the belt. The symptom does not originate gradually, while driving and warmed up the intermitind hiss starts and goes away in a snap.

The hiss is still present with the belt removed.

more to add I just drove it cold and before it warms up the hiss does corilate with the throttle but then it becomes intermittent and does not corilate with the throttle after warming up.

I get no check engine light.

The IAC sensor is about 35 bucks so 2 questions Is the o-ring available seporate and should I try that sensor if the o-ring is not available seporate.

IMO i do not have a difinitive answer sufficiant enough to just throw 35 bucks at it.

Yep you can get the "o" ring. But you might want to pull the IAC out first and check the ring. I'm pretty sure they're 2 T25 torex screws that hold it in. Inspect the "o" ring. If you want to try to clean it first before pulling it out you can spray some throttle body cleaner in the back port of the throttle body with it off. The port should fill up when the truck is off or at a low idle. Then rev it up a bit after you fill it and watch for it to go down when the IAC opens.
