Pat...one side of that intake is open, the one nearest the fender, to catch some air from the stock fender penetration.

Something like this with my current intake mod could add a little more responsiveness for sure.

It's not bad, but I feel the Volant is a much better intake. I am waiting for the Vararam 4G or I will buy a Volant!

The Volant pulls from the stock location in the fender and has an option for a 4" ram-air tube. This is a hold-over from the 3rd gen design that replaced a round fog light. They haven't released a 4th gen ram-air tube yet. I hear they are looking into bringing air in from the lower grille area. I simply added a piece of 4" dryer vent tube (flexible) to this 4" flange and extended it straight down. It hangs (zip-tied actually) right next to the end of the frame just behind the the air damn/front bumper. Didn't bother putting a screen or anything on it since it's so far from the air box, it's nearly straight down (nothing can get partially in and then stuck) and the pressure drop entering the air box is so great that any water mist or other particulate will most likely fall out of the air stream before reaching the filter.

I think it definitely pulls cooler air since I never closed off this flange in the air box and I was most likely drawing in some pretty warm engine compartment air when necessary @ WOT. I have noticed about a 1/4 MPG improvement over the last couple of tanks but that could be just the standard break in period progression since I have less than 3k miles on the truck.
